Saturday May 1st: Jays v Oakland Game three of four.
Lineups: Oakland: Pennington, Davis, Barton, Kouzmanoff, Rosales, Fox , Gross, Donaldson, Patterson.
Jays: Lewis, Hill, Lind, Wells DH, Ruiz, Gonzalez, Bautista, Molina, Snider.
Pitching Eveland v Gonzalez.
Top 1st: Pennington, 3-0 come on Dana. Grounds to short nice divining stop by Gonzalez, throw to Overbay one down. Davis grounds to Hill throw to Ruiz two down. Barton singles to Lewis in centre today, Kouzmanoff pops it up to Gonzalez behind short.
Bottom 1st: Lewis strikes out looking, one down for Hill grounds to third long throw beats Aaron still not running hard yet. Lind, fly ball to left to end the inning. Easy one for Gonzalez.
Top 2nd: Rosales grounds back to Eveland throw to Ruiz one down Fox, full count and walks pitch way outside. One on one down for Gabe Gross. Walks him on four pitches, two in a row. Eveland having trouble here. Molina out there sorting him out. Donaldson, need a ground ball here Dana. Strikes him out, that will do, two down. Patterson with two on, singles to right goes to second on the throw here comes Fox and the run Oakland up one. Top of the order again, Pennington with two in scoring position. Grounds to Ruiz takes it himself to end the inning but Oakland out in front early, 1-0.
Bottom 2nd: Wells leading off, Vernon is DH today. Bounces one to short, throw beats Vernon, one down. Ruiz hitting behind Vernon today, interesting when he has such a lousy average .111. Bounces to short throw to first two down. Am not sure it would be better to send Randy down to AAA Vegas to play every day. He is not contributing here. Gonzalez, had a great April with seven home runs, club record for short stop. Strikes out here throw to first for the out. Jays go meekly not quietly.
Top 3rd: Eveland already on 38 pitches, his last inning was 30 ouch….. Gonzalez only on 17. Jays opposition pitchers must love pitching against Jays free swingers. Davis grounds to Hill at second throw to Ruiz, one down for Barton, another walk, number three today. Kouzmanoff another full count. Bounces one up the middle no chance for two as they get Barton at second, two down for Rosales. Grounds to Hill throw to Ruiz, for third out. Much better but Eveland has to settle down here if he expects to get out of the sixth inning.
Bottom 3rd: Meantime on the other hand Gonzalez looking at a complete game with ease at this rate. 17 pitches for six outs. Bautista, lines it right at short one down. Snider showing signs of life this week, not this time a tame bounces back to Gonzalez and throw to first for second out. . Molina, grounds first pitch to first for third out, far too easy here for Gonzalez so far. No hitter through three and Jays do not look as if they can buy a hit today. 23 ? pitches… Eveland has thrown more than that in one inning.
Top 4th: Fox leading off. Pops it up this is trouble, with three Jays going for it and of course drops in between them, on second. Gross grounds to Ruiz throw to Eveland covering but Fox to third on play. One down for Donaldson no question on this one home run to left on first pitch and Oakland all over Eveland who hasn’t a clue today, 3-0. First major league home run for Donaldson. Patterson lines out to Lind in left . Pennington singles to left, they are hammering Eveland here. Davis, runner going, throw not in time and runner safe at second. Nothing much going right for Eveland, Davis singles to left here comes the runner 4-0 Oakland. Great situational hitting by Oakland. Their turn to rub it in today and teaching Jays how. Barton pitch out perfect throw by Molina to get Davis and Eveland rescued by his catcher here from further punishment. He is brutal today. 68 pitches.
Bottom 4th: Lewis leading off. Grounds to second throw not in time and Fred safe at first, first hit against a perfect Gonzalez today. But doesn’t matter if Jays cannot make it mean something and score off it. Hill 3-0 count. Count full, walks, Lind with two on and no outs, due for a home run Adam. Bounces one down the line to first, one down but runners move up for Vernon. Ohhh, grounds to third coming home is Lewis and throw high and in Fred’s face, bounces off the catcher’s glove, run scores and runner moves to third, Vernon at first. Ruiz, with still only one out, chance to shine here Randy. Strikes out, Cito time to pull the plug and buy him a bus ticket to Vegas ….Gonzalez with two down and two on. Grounds to second throw to first for third out. Jays back to their failure to bring in runners in scoring position; they had Gonzalez in trouble there but could not capitalize. 51 pitches.
Top 5th: Eveland still out there but knowing Cito he will be an on a short leash. . Yes Casey Janssen is already up in bullpen. Barton fly ball to Snider, Kouzmanoff lines hard at Aaron nice catch for second out. Rosales grounds to Bautista at third, throw to Ruiz and finally Eveland has a good quick three up and down inning, but is it too late? 77 pitches
Bottom 5th: Bautista leading off, strikes out one down. Snider, strikes out on three pitches chasing a high one. Travis they will keep throwing you that pitch until you stop swinging at it or better still learn to hit it. Two quick easy outs for Gonzalez. Molina, count full. Walks but looked good. Lewis at bat, Molina stealing there but Lewis goes after ball and fouls it off. That’s better singles into shallow right. Two on for Hill who has not found his stroke yet. Grounds first pitch to second, Lewis out at second. Aaron continues to struggle. 71 pitches.
Top 6th: Fox High fly ball to Lewis in centre, one down, Gross lines it to fumbles it but manages to throw and get him two pitches two outs, Donaldson grounds to Gonzalez throw to Ruiz just beats him, that will get Dana another inning. Cito is happy if they can get into the seventh. Where was all of this earlier? 82 pitches,
Bottom 6th: Eveland has done his job now time for the absent hitters. Lind leading off. Strikes out but good at bat though made him work for it, Wells, lines out to centre, two down. Ruiz way swings at one way outside. Swings over this one to strike out. This is painful Cito to watch Ruiz so out of his depth here. I can see why you leave him on the bench but why is he here? Let’s see some other younger talent. 85 pitches for Gonzalez.
Top 7th: Probably his last inning, Patterson grounds to first one down. Pennington, great bunt up third line Bautista throw (just) not in time. When was the last time we saw Jays get a good bunt down? McCoy keeps trying but everyone expects him to do it and no surprise element. Davis, singles to Snider in right. Bullpen will be working. Barton, two on. Fly ball out to Lind in left, runners hold two down. Here comes Cito. Eveland gets into the seventh but struggled earlier, especially in the second when he threw 30 pitches. Casey Janssen in, Kouzmanoff with two on and two down. Grounds to Hill at second throw to first for third out.
Bottom 7th: Jays running out of at bats to get back into this thing. Gonzalez leading off. 0-2 today. No home run heroics today. Strikes out looking. One down. Bautista, Oakland bullpen working. Grounds it hard off glove of Gonzalez, no chance for a play and infield single for Bautista. Snider another 0fer day for Travis. Let’s see if he lays off that high pitch…. Full count, here it is Travis…pitched away, fouls it off. That’s a bit better Travis, gets hold of this one to centre field but short of going out, nice swing though and you took him to six pitches, but Travis doesn’t see it that way. Two down and that’s it for Gonzalez. Overbay pinch hitting. Now pitching Tyson Ross. That will do Lyle grounds it down first base line, here comes Bautista and run scores from first, catcher missed the tag. 4-2 with Lyle at second, Lewis here’s another Lewis doubles to right and Lyle scores, Lewis stretching it to triple not good, easy out at third, that was dumb play Fred…… 4-3 score though but Lewis would have been the tying run at second with top of the order up. That was not aggressive play it was poor judgement and base running. Let’s see how bad that mistake is.
Top 8th: Janssen still pitching Buck catching and Lyle at first, Rosales grounds to Gonzalez behind third, no chance for play, Fox pops it up to Gonzalez at the second base bag. One down runner holds at first. That’s it for Casey, here comes Downs. Cito by the book. lefty lefty. That’s ok until we get into extra innings game. Gross full count. Strikes out looking. Gold star Cito. Two down for Donaldson, grounds to second throw to Overbay for third out. The bat flies towards Downs though and may have hit him. Limping off the field.
Bottom 8th: Hill, hitless today. Brad Ziegler submariner pitcher. Hill strikes out. Lind at bat, I would like to see Adam get hold of one of these pitches. We will have to wait for another day, grounds to short throw to first two down, Wells, but that’s it for Ziegler. Bailey now pitching.. Oh boy. High fly ball to left but not this time Vernon, third out.
Top 9th: Downs still in there only seven pitches last inning. Patterson leading off. Grounds back to Downs, throw to Overbay for the first out. Pennington, singles into left, one on one down for Davis. Grounds to Gonzalez, on to Hill, throw to first not in time to get Davis. This should be interesting, especially with Molina out of game, Downs will have to keep Davis close. Barton, Davis testing Downs move to first here. There he goes on Buck’s throw back to Downs, Hill drops the ball Davis safe at second. Barton strikes out to end the inning. Jays down to their last three.
Bottom 9th: Buck leading off, he can make it interesting here. Strikes out. Gonzalez, 0-3 today, grounds to third throw to first. 0-4. Bautista last chance. Quickly 0-2. Strikes out.
Jays lose a close one 4-3.
That mistake by Lewis cost Jays today.
