Brilliant Cecil wins supported by long ball power from Jays

Monday May 3rd
Toronto v Cleveland in Cleveland. First game of three.

Jays: Lewis, Hill, Lind, Wells, Overbay, Gonzalez, Bautista, Buck, Snider.
Indians: Cabrera, Sizemore , Choo, Kearns, Peralta, Hafner, LaPorta, Marson,Valbuena.

Top 1st: Lewis grounds to second Valbuena throw to LaPorta at first, one down for Hill, grounds to Cabrera at short, throw to LaPorta at first two down. Lind 3-0 count and walks, Wells lines out to short Cabrera to end the inning.
Bottom 1st: Cabrera leading off grounds to Bautista throw to Overbay, one down. Sizemore grounds back to Cecil, throw to Overbay, two down, Choo fly ball to Lewis in left. Three up and down for Cecil.

Top 2nd: Overbay fly ball to Sizemore in centre. Lots of online discussion now about replacing Lyle. Time running out for him ? regardless of his contract. Jays are paying his salary not showcasing him for another team. Sometimes Cito’s loyalty is misplaced. Gonzalez singles to left, Bautista there we go, home run to centre, two runs score and Jays are out early again 2-0 Jays. Buck lines out to left, Kearns, two down for Snider, Travis going the opposite field doubles to left. Lewis strikes out leaving Travis out there.
Bottom 2nd Kearns strikes out. Peralta strikes out, Cecil mowing them down here early. Hafner grounds to Hill at second, throw to Overbay at first to end this inning. Cecil pitching well.

Top 3rd: Hill leading off doubles to right centre, one on for Lind, pops it up to Kearns in left. Wells, singles to centre here comes Aaron, motoring in from second, nothing wrong with his hamstring, 3-0 Jays. Overbay one down one on. Grounds to Valbuena at second, throw to Cabrera to get Vernon but no chance to double up. Lyle safe at first. Two down for Gonzalez. 3-0 count. Take or leave? Takes strike one. There’s ball four, Gonzalez walks, two on two down for Bautista, full count, no Jose, strikes out looking. But Jays get another. Talbot on 49 pitches.
Bottom 3rd: La Porta, lines it hard at Bautista great catch Jose, doing it all tonight. That was a double at least. One down. Marson, grounds first pitch to Gonzalez throw to Overbay two down. Valbuena, strikes out looking. Cecil 32 pitches.

Top 4th: Buck, showing patience here tonight. Strikes out this time. Snider, YES Travis, lines this one to right this time, home run Travis. Just clears that wall, that was basically a bullet line drive never went higher than eight or nine feet. 4-0 Jays. Travis 2-2 with double and home run tonight. We all love you Travis, Lewis grounds to Valbuena at second, throw to La Porta at first just beats him. Hill, two down lines it off end of bat into shallow right centre running diving makes a highlight reel catch to rob Aaron here. What a catch. 64 pitches
Bottom 4th: Cabrera, strikes out on three pitches, number four for Cecil. Sizemore, pops it up to Bautista. Choo, with two down, full count. Strikes him out. Cecil humming tonight. 44 pitches. Five strikeouts.

Top 5th: Lind, both these pitchers working fast tonight. Full count. Way outside, walks him. Wells, RBI single last at bat. Grounds back up the middle but hits the umpire ? bounces to Valbuena throw to second back to first double play ball but did that hit the umpire’s foot? Two down. Overbay, grounds FIRST pitch come on Lyle, what did you just see here? 73 pitches but thanks to Overbay. Add me to the list to sit this guy that was a dumb at bat.
Bottom 5th: Cecil hardly sat down there. Thanks Lyle. Kearns, grounds to Bautista throw to Overbay for the first out. Peralat 3-0 count, there’s a strike. Fly ball to Snider in right, two down. Hafner, 0-2. Grounds to Hill, throw to Overbay for third out. 56 pitches.

Top 6th: Gonzalez leading off. Fly ball to right. One down. Bautista, strikes out, two down for Buck. Grounds to third, long throw to first for the final out. Three up and down. 84 pitches.
Bottom 6th: La Porta, a nubber in front of the plate Buck throws to Overbay for first out. Marson, full count, strikes out looking, nice pitch Brett. Valbuena, strikes out, number seven for Cecil tonight. 69 pitch count.

Top 7th: Snider 2-2 tonight. Oh dear robbed by great diving catch by La Porta at first. That was a base hit all the way for Travis. Lewis, grounds to third, throw to first two down. Hill, singles into shallow left, Lind, hitless tonight. High fly ball to centre, deepest part of the ballpark, but Sizemore has it to end the inning. 92 pitches for Talbot.
Bottom 7th: Cabrera, off the end of his bat to Cecil throw to Overbay, one down. Sizemore, 3-0 come on Brett, walks him, first guy on base tonight. Now Cecil, must not let down here. Choo 2-0 count, 3-0, Cecil losing concentration, walks him, come on someone settle the kid down, we have seen this scenario before. Buck out there but we need coach to get out there. Kearns, strikes out. Peralta, two on two down. Singles into left, here comes the run, 4-1 Jays. Hafner, tying run at the plate, strikes out but Brett’s no-hitter is gone. Nine strike outs and only the one hit, Brett you had a great outing. 94 pitches.

Top 8th: Wells, strikes out swinging on three pitches. Overbay, you need to redeem yourself with me Lyle after that lousy last at bat. Grounds to second throw to first for second out. Gonzalez, full count and walks. Bautista, Fly ball to right corner for third out. Is Cecil coming out for the eighth?
Bottom 8th: Yes here comes Brett. I think I would have someone up in bullpen Cito. La Porta, strikes out, number ten tonight. 100 pitches. Marson full count, fly ball to Snider in right, two down. Valbuena grounds to Hill, throw to Overbay for third out.

Top 9th: Buck lines this one to right centre this one is carrying and it is out of here, home run for Buck. 5-1 Jays. That’s it for Talbot. 110 pitches tonight. Tony Sipp facing Snider lefty lefty, full count. Strikes out but first time tonight. He will be happy with his night so far. Lewis, one down. 3-0 count. Walks on ball four. Hill, with one on one down, two hits tonight for Aaron. Lewis going but Aaron fouls it off. Lewis stealing but Sipp has him picked off. Two down. Fly ball to centre for third out. Downs or Gregg?
Bottom 9th: Gregg, glad I didn’t bet on that one, I guess he needs the work. Grudzielanek, pinch hitter for Cabrera, fly ball to shallow left, Lewis has the speed gets to this one. One down for Peralta doubles into right, past both Hill and Overbay diving for this one. One on one down, Choo, grounds to Gonzalez at short looks runner back to second throw to Overbay for second out. That would have been easy double play if previous hit had been a single. Kearns 3-0 come on Kevin, focus here. Walks him on four pitches. Not good. Peralta there’s a strike, 2-2. High, full count, strikes out looking. Jays win 5-1.

The very good: Cecil, one hitter through eight. Ten strikeouts, making a very strong bid for rotation and Tallet’s spot.

The good: Snider two hits, home run and double and robbed of a third. Buck home run, Bautista home run and great defensive play. Hill two hits. Overall for the team a lot less first pitch free swinging. Snider, Buck and Bautista turn to hit the home runs. This team is nothing but democratic sharing these around.

The bad: Overbay, sorry but that was not a good at bat right after the double play to give three quick outs.
How about the crowd tonight just over 10,000 and they worry in Toronto?
