Sloppy game as Jays lose again 4-3 to the Rays despite a great start by Alvarez Lawrie's tempetr could cost the Jays later.

Rays v Jays Game two for two game series. Jays get a break this is only a two game series, they can only lose two. We knew this would be a tough week for them and so far borne out as Jays outclassed last night by the Rays. They have a tough one tonight against Price who has owned them 10-2. Boston already closing the gap and winning big tonight 5-0 against Seattle. Mercifully no Lind, Thames or Arencibia. At least Alvarez has some support here. Some speed out there with Davis. Farrell is pulling the strings tonight. Not many fans will disagree with these changes. Lineups: Rays: Zobrist, Upton, Joyce, Pena, Scott, Rodriguez, Rhymes, Molina, Johnson and pitching Price. Jays: Johnson, Escobar, Bautista, Encarnacion, Francisco, Lawrie, Rasmus, Mathis, Davis and pitching Alvarez Top 1st: Zobrist, 1-2 count, fly ball to Davis in left, one down. Upton, OH WHAT GREAT CATCH, pops it up to left in foul ground, and Encarnacion makes great catch in the first rows, over balances at the fence, but makes the out. Highlight reel catch. Lind who ? Joyce bunting and oh Alvarez off balance throws it away at first moves up to second. Not a smart move by Alvarez. Error on the play. Pena grounds to Johnson at second throw to Edwin for the out. Nice inning for Alvarez. 12 pitches. Bottom 1st: Johnson leading off. Good at bat here seven pitches so far. Full count, singles into right, nine pitch at bat for that single, very nice Kelly. Escobar. 2-2 count, lines it to right, Kelly holds up, thought it was an out, and throw beats him. One down for Bautista. Escobar at first. 2-0 count, fly ball to Upton in centre for second out. Encarnacion, 1-2 count, no way, strikes out that ball was high, high. Umpire does not agree with Edwin or many thousands. 23 pitch count. That is good start by the Jays, you need Price out of there fast. Top 2nd: Scott, grounds to Lawrie playing in right for the shift. Throw to first. One down. Rodriguez, grounds to Escobar, throw to first, two down. Rhymes, 2-1 grounds to Encarnacion at first, bobbles it and throw to Alvarez covering for the out. Nice six pitch inning by Alvarez. Pitch count 18. Bottom 2nd: Francisco leading off playing DH tonight. 1-2 count, grounds to short, throw to first, tags him out. One down for Lawrie. Perfect lifts it into shallow right for a base hit. One on, one down for Rasmus. There goes Lawrie and throw hits him and bounces into right centre, Lawrie off to third. Speed. Lines it up the middle Rhymes throw to first to get Rasmus. Lawrie holds at third. Mathis, two down. 2-2 count, fly ball to right for the out. Pitch count 40. Top 3rd: Much faster game so far than last night. Ex-Jay Jose Molina. Grounds to Johnson throw to Edwin for the out. Elliot Johnson, 1-2 count, grounds to Johnson, throw to Edwin, two down. Top of the order again, Zobrist. Lines it at Bautista in right but misplayed this and over his head, appeared to not see this until too late. Double for Zobrist. Upton, lines it to Davis in left. Throw gets Zobrist as Mathis blocks off the plate. Throw right on the money. VERY nice plays by both Davis and Mathis. 32 pitch count. Bottom 3rd: Rajai Davis, full count, grounds to short, throw rushed and high and gets away at first and Rajai to second. SPEED kills. Safe at second, nobody out and watch him steal third. Johnson, Price distracted by Rajai. Good. 2-2 count, strikes out looking. Pitch number 50. Escobar, one down. garbage, grounds first pitch to third, throw to first two down. That was one lousy at bat by Escobar. Give Rajai a chance to go. Bautista, 2-1 count, there goes Davis, safe without a throw, 2-2 count, Jose singles up the middle here comes Rajai to score, 1-0 Jays. RBI for Jose at first. Encarnacion, launches this one, first pitch high into left centre, home run for Edwin, 3-0 Jays. Francisco, 2-2 count, takes strike three. 62 pitch count. Top 4th: Joyce leading off. Bounces first pitch to Encarnacion at first, one down. Pena, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down. Scott, lines it to Lawrie in shallow right for the shift, throw wide at first and pulls Edwin off the bag. Error to Lawrie. Scott safe at first. Rodriguez, grounds first pitch to Escobar, throw to Encarnacion at first to end the inning and rescue Lawrie. No damage done. 43 pitches. Bottom 4th: Lawrie leading off. 0-2 count, ouch, hits him right on the knee. Lawrie ok. Tough Canuck. But that will swell tonight without ice. Rasmus with one on. There goes Lawrie, Rasmus grounds back to Price throw to first to get Rasmus but not two as Brett was easily safe at second. One down for Mathis. Pops it up to shallow right foul ground for the second out. Davis, 1-2, grounds to third, throw to Pena at first. 74 pitch count. Jays are already 1-7 with runners in scoring position, that hurts against a team like the Rays. Top 5th: Rhymes, singles to Bautista in right. Molina, need a ground ball here. There goes Rhymes, grounds to Johnson, no chance for two throw to Edwin for the out. One down Rhymes at second for Elliott Johnson, grounds to Encarnacion, takes it himself for the second out. Rhymes to third. Zobrist, 2-2 count, pops it up to shallow centre, Rasmus dives but cannot get there, Rhymes scores double for Zobrist. 3-1 Jays. Upton, full count, grounds up the line to Encarnacion, steps on the bag for the out. 61 pitch count. Bottom 5th: Johnson, grounds to Pena at first, one down. Escobar, how much longer with this guy in front of Jose? grounds second pitch to short, throw to Pena for second out. Three pitches two outs the worst. Bautista, now Price will be pitching him a lot differently than he would if there was someone on first, full count. Strikes out swinging. 83 pitches. Price’s best inning for Price tonight but no thanks to Escobar. Top 6th: Joyce, 3-1 count, singles past Escobar at short, one on for Pena, very nice, grounds to Lawrie in right on the shift, throw to Johnson, over to Encarnacion, double play to rescue Alvarez here, two down for Scott. Lines it to Davis in left for third out. Pitch count 68. Bottom 6th: Encarnacion leading off. 2-2 count, outside full count, strikes out swinging. One down for Francisco, Ben has been so unlucky with his hits, overdue for big one. 2-0 count, grounds to short, throw to Pena at first, two down for Lawrie. 1-2 count, grounds to Rodriguez at third, throw to Pena for the out. 97 pitches. Top 7th: Rodriguez leading off. Hammers this one to centre and over the wall for home run. 3-2 Jays. Rhymes, singles to Davis in left. One on for Molina, NO WAY, grounds to Escobar and he drops it. Both runners safe and that was an easy double play, should be two errors on that play, Escobar is not playing well these days with bat or glove. Johnson with two on, 1-2 count, lines to Davis in left, Davis bobbles it twice and runner Rhymes scores 3-3 game. Two on and still nobody out, thanks to Escobar and Davis. Zobrist with nobody out, two on. 2-1 count, wild pitch and runner to third on the play. Full count. Lines to Johnson, he knocks it down, saves a run but bases loaded. Upton finally grounds to Johnson, steps on the bag and throw to Edwin double play run scores 4-3 Rays and two down. Joyce, here comes the manager, that is it for Alvarez, a great game ruined by sloppy play of Escobar. Darren Oliver now pitching runner at third. 1-2 count, strikes out swinging. Bottom 7th: Time for Jays hitters to repay Alvarez here, he pitched such a great game. Four errors by his defense hardly helps him against a team like the Rays. Bottom of the order which should help Price finish this inning at least. Rasmus, grounds to second, throw to Pena, one down. Mathis. 100 pitches for Price but he does not deserve to be winning this game. Alvarez outpitched him and Price knows it. Takes strike three, two down for Davis. Full count, lines it to right, easy double for Rajai, no need to slide there Rajai. Johnson, also owes Alvarez. 1-1 count, grounds up the middle to Rhymes but throw to Pena for the out. Top 8th: Pena leading off. Singles to Davis in left, one on for Scott. Jason Frasor warming up in Jays bullpen. 2-1 count, grounds to Johnson throw to Escobar to get Pena, unable to throw to first make it a double play, time to get Vazquez in there and show Escobar what this game is all about. That is it for Oliver, here comes Frasor with runner at first and one down. Rodriguez, 2-1 count, grounds to Escobar, to Johnson over to Edwin not in time. Two down and runner at first. Rhymes, pops it up to Johnson for third out. Bottom 8th: Jays get the satisfaction of getting Price out of the game at least, he will be thanking the Jays errors for his lead. Joel Peralta now pitching. Escobar, 0-3 tonight, not a good game for him with bat or glove. Fly ball to right 0-4 night for Escobar. Not worth coming to the game tonight Yunel and I am sure your teammates agree. Bautista, 3-1 count, pops it up to Pena for the out. Two down for Encarnacion. Gets under it and pops it up high to left for the out. Top 9th: Casey Janssen now pitching. Molina, 1-2 count, strikes out looking. One down for Johnson. Singles to Bautista in right. Zobrist, 1-2 count, pops it up to Davis in left for second out. Upton, there goes Johnson and Mathis throw has him picked off. That was not very smart play by Johnson. Bottom 9th: Last chance for the Jays but with Rodney pitching good luck. Thames pinch hitting for Francisco. 0-2 count, strikes out swinging, one down for Lawrie. 3-1 count, wide ball four, no, umpire calls it strike !! Lawrie now full count, pitch now high and wide no, umpire calls strikeout. Lawrie loses it and gets ejected. Oh now he throws his helmet on the ground and it hits the umpire, that is not good. Now Farrell arguing, and he gets ejected. Rasmus, grounds to Pena. Steps on the bag to finish this one. Very rough ending to this one. Now a fan throws beer at the umpire, Ugly. Lawrie will pay with a suspension for throwing that helmet, which is not helping anyone, least of all the team at this time. If Lawrie learns a lesson to control his anger, then it may be worth it, but hurting your team is never worth it. Once again as with last night the sloppy defensive play this time by Escobar ruins a great outing by Alvarez who had completely outpitched Price all night until the 7th. Price had pitch 30 more pitches than Alvarez after only six innings. Tomorrow it gets no better. Yankees are in town but as with the Rays Jays escape only playing a two game series. Right now they need to worry about their defensive plays and now with Lawrie gone for several games at least, not good. The very good: Alvarez for the first six innings. Encarnacion, home run and the catch of Upton and falling into the first base seats, Davis throw to get Zobrist at home plate, Mathis to block him off. Double play in the 6th to rescue Alvarez. BUT that is it tonight. The awful: Tonight’s goat Escobar in the 7th. But then the bottom of the 9th.with repercussions still to come. Boston win and another game picked up on the Jays. Yankees lose to the Orioles.
