Morrow throws a complete game shutout for Jays 2-0 win over the Mets
Mets v Jays. Game two of three.
Last night’s blowout of the Mets was in no way due to Romero pitching, he was very lucky to get such great run support. Today Morrow who has been far more consistent than Romero and pitching like a number one Romero should. Jays will be taking his contribution gladly after Romero. The big bats for the Jays were missing last night but they still won handily. This team has a lot more depth than previous seasons. Jan Gomes also has been a more than adequate replacement for Lawrie.
Lineups: Mets: Torres, Baxter, Murphy, Duda, Davis, Turner, Nieuwenhuis, Cedeno, Nickeas and Batista pitching.
Jays: Johnson, Escobar, Bautista, Encarnacion, Arencibia, Thames, Davis, Gomes, Mathis and Morrow pitching.
Top 1st: Torres, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging, one down for Baxter, lines to Davis in centre for the second out. Murphy, grounds first pitch to Johnson, throw to Encarnacion for final out. Nice inning by Morrow to start.
Bottom 1st: Johnson, break his bat as he grounds to Murphy at second, throw to Davis at first. One down for Escobar, grounds to Turner at third, throw to Davis, two down for Bautista, 3-1 count, high full count, pops it up to catcher Nickeas for third out.
Top 2nd: Duda, leading off, golfs this one to right, for Bautista to make the catch, one down for Davis, shift right, lines to short right at Gomes to make a nice catch. Two down. Turner, grounds to Escobar, throw to Edwin and Morrow has a quick three up and down inning.
Bottom 2nd: Encarnacion leading off, 1-2 count, there we go Edwin, lines it to third past a diving Turner, to Nieuwenhuis in left for stand-up double. One on for Arencibia, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, one down. Thames, full count, inside ball four, patient at bat by Thames. Two on for Davis. 1-2 count, outside strikes out swinging. Gomes with two on and two down, nice clean hit as he lines it to centre but Torres makes the catch to end the inning and leave that leadoff double out there. That was not good.
Top 3rd: Nieuwenhuis, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging, great pitch, one down. Cedeno singles to right past Johnson for Bautista. One on, one down for Nickeas, 2-2 count, strikes out looking, right on the outside corner, a beauty. Two down for Torres, first pitch pops it up to Johnson at second, another good inning for Morrow, looking very impressive to date.
Bottom 3rd: Batista something wrong with him in the warm up and now trainer takes him off the field. Hefner now pitching for Batista. Mathis grounds first pitch back to Hefner, throw to Davis at first for the out. One down for Johnson, full count, pulls it to Duda in right for a single. One on one down. Escobar, 2-0 count, there goes Kelly, lines it to Duda in right but for the out as Johnson retreats. Two down for Bautista. 1-1 count, Grounds to Murphy at second, steps on the bag to end the inning.
Top 4th: Baxter, grounds to Johnson throw to Edwin, one down. Murphy, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down for Duda. Fly ball to centre but Rajai Davis makes the third out, a little late on that one misjudged the swing. Morrow continues to roll here.
Bottom 4th: Encarnacion leading off, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, one down for Arencibia, grounds to Murphy at second, throw to Davis at first for the second out. Thames full count, pulls it to Davis at first flips to Hefner covering for the out. Pitching duel out there after the slugfest last night, is it ever thus.
Top 5th: Davis leading off, fly ball to Thames in left. One down for Turner, lines first pitch to centre for Davis to make the catch, he misjudged that one as well but with that speed he can recover without trouble. Two down. Nieuwenhuis, strikes out swinging for third out. This game is humming along today.
Bottom 5th: Davis, strikes out swinging, one down. Gomes, grounds to Turner at third, throw to Davis for the out at first, two down. Mathis, that’s better, singles over shortstop to Nieuwenhuis in left. One on, two down for Johnson, lines it to right, Torres misses the ball here comes Mathis to score first run, Nieuwenhuis recovers the ball 1-0 Jays as Kelly motors into third on that error by Torres. Jays have something going. Escobar, first pitch swinging, lines it to right here comes Johnson.2-0 Jays. Escobar could have been at second as ball throw back misses cut off. Bautista grounds to third, throw to Cedeno at second to get Escobar. Jays hitters get this one going here.
Top 6th: Morrow has a lead to work with now. Cedeno strikes out looking, great pitch, one down for Nickeas, fly ball to Thames in left for the out. Two down for Torres, 1-2 count, lines it to right for Bautista, great running catch to the wall by Jose to make third out, Morrow is awesome out there today.
Bottom 6th: Encarnacion, high very high first pitch fly ball to Torres in centre, one down. Arencibia strikes out swinging, two down. Thames pops it up to Turner at third. Three up and down. Hefner has pitched very well, just no run support to date at least.
Top 7th: Baxter, grounds first pitch to Escobar at short, throw to Edwin at first, one down. Murphy, jams him as he grounds to Johnson at second, throw to Edwin, two down. Duda, here’s a hit as he lines it to right field corner. Jose throw right on the money but just safe. Davis one on two down, full count, strikes out swinging. Morrow looks as cool as he was in the first inning.
Bottom 7th: Davis, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, just too far as first base umpire says yes on the appeal. One down for Yan Gomes, fly ball to centre for Torres to make the out. Two down. Mathis, strikes out swinging at pitch way outside to end the inning.
Top 8th: Vizquel in for Gomes at third. Turner leading off, strikes out. One down for Nieuwenhuis, pops it up to Vizquel to make the catch at third, two down. Cedeno 2-2 count, grounds to Escobar, throw to Edwin to get Cedeno and third out. Morrow looks as if it is the first inning not the eighth. Great ovation as he walks off.
Bottom 8th: That is it for Hefner, he pitched very well to come in place of injured Batista. After only two innings. 65 pitches for Hefner. Tim Byrdak now pitching. Johnson, 1-2 count, fly ball to Torres makes the out on the track in centre, one down. Here comes the manager, another change and look at this guy, ex-Jays Jon Rauch now pitching. Escobar, pulls it down third base line to Nieuwenhuis in left for a stand-up double. One on, one down for Bautista, 1-2 count, fly ball to Torres in shallow centre, two down. Encarnacion, one on. Intentional walk to get to Arencibia. 2-2 count, Strikes out swinging to leave Escobar out there.
Top 9th: Now can Jays finish this one off? Morrow out there to start at least. Hairston pinch hitting for Nickeas. Hairston 3-0 count, low ball four. First walk today for Morrow. Not what Brandon was looking for. One on for Torres, this is better, fly ball to right for Bautista to make the out, one down, one on. Baxter, lines to right to Bautista, Jose throw to second and Escobar tags him out, what a great throw by Jose as he threw immediately to Escobar from the corner, Baxter furious, doing a Lawrie here, reckons Escobar missed him with the tag as he dove into the bag. Here comes Terry Collins to continue the argument, no joy and two down for Murphy. Tough call as it appears he may be right unless the tag hit the shirt sleeve. Murphy, 3-1 count, lines right at Escobar to make the final out today. Morrow wins complete game shutout.
The excellent: Morrow shutout complete game, cannot do not much better than that, he looked the part out there today and deserved the win. He seemed “locked in” from first inning.
The very good: Jose great running over the shoulder catch in the 6th to save a double.
Jays did not need much offence today but Mathis, Johnson and Escobar provide enough for the win. The second game where no big runs from the big guys Bautista and Encarnacion and that is good. Jays bullpen also well rested for their big week in Tampa and Texas although this series has another game tomorrow but it would be good to see Jays sweep the Mets here.
