Lawrie walk off home run wins dramatic come from behind game aided by power from Johnson, and Bautista to support fine effort by Hutchison
Jays v Rangers. Game two of three.
Tonight rookie Drew Hutchison pitching. Good to see that Farrell has Arencibia sitting tonight. Official excuse day game tomorrow. Mathis is playing far better than Arencibia right now and has earned the spot. He will be much better with rookie Hutchison in my book as this game could get ugly the way Jays hitters are underperforming. Top 4 yesterday 0-15, that is not just bad, that is awful. Escobar also on a short leash leading off and Farrell is already suggesting moving him down the order. That would be fine with me. Tonight not so much a question of how Hutchison pitches but rather what run support, if any, that he gets. Jays hitters in a massive slump and not just Jose who has disappeared from sight and has been a non-factor for far too long.
Lineups: Rangers: Kinsler, Andrus, Young, Cruz, Murphy, Napoli, Moreland, Gonzalez, Gentry and Neftali Feliz pitching.
Jays: Escobar, Johnson, Bautista, Lind, Encarnacion, Thames, Lawrie, Rasmus, Mathis and Hutchison pitching.
Top 1st: Kinsler strikes out swinging, one down. Andrus, strikes out looking, two down. Young, strikes out swinging, strikes out the side, 13 pitches. Great start for Hutchison. Now give him some run support.
Bottom 1st: Escobar, there we go singles opposite field to right, one on for Johnson. 1-2 count, Oh boy, grounds to second over to the bag and back to first, double play ball. Two down for Bautista. 2-2 count, strikes out swinging and so it goes on. 17 pitches.
Top 2nd: Cruz, full count, fouling them off, here, strikes out, number four. Murphy. Singles to Thames in left, there goes the no-hitter. One on one down for Napoli. 3-0, Hutchison has lost the zone here. Outside ball four, two on for Moreland. 2-2 count, full count singles to Thames in left to load the bases. Gonzalez singles to Bautista, Murphy run scores first run. 1-0 Texas. Bases stay loaded. Gentry grounds to Lawrie, throw to second to get Gonzalez, on to Lind not in time for double play. Napoli scores, 2-0 Texas. two on two down, Kinsler, there goes Gentry and steal second. Full count, doubles to Bautista, fumbles it off his glove, nothing going right for Jose with bat or glove. Moreland and Gentry score, 4-0 Texas and this is a blowout early. Andrus, one on two down. 2-2 count, Singles to Thames, Kinsler scores 5-0 Texas. Still two down. Young, lines to Bautista but Jose makes the catch to end the tough lesson for the rookie. Even tougher when you know your offence is so bad that you will not get much help form them. 45 pitch count.
Bottom 2nd: Lind first at bat !!!!! 2-2 count. Fly ball to Cruz in shallow right, one down. Encarnacion, high 2-2, outside full count, singles to left. One on one down for Thames. Oh boy, grounds to third, over to second on to first, yes double play ball to ruin this inning. Thames not popular guy right now. 28 pitch count.
Top 3rd: Texas in control of this one. Cruz leading off. Grounds to Lawrie, throw to Lind, one out. Murphy, low 3-0 count, lines to Escobar for second out. Napoli, full count, ball four. One on, Moreland. Lines out to Thames in left, no more damage. Pitch count 64. Better than second inning but he still needs RUNS...and right now this Jays team is not hitting.
Bottom 3rd: Lawrie with his first at bat after almost an hour. Ouch. That says it all. Fly ball to centre, Gentry makes the catch. One down for Rasmus. Full count, taking him the distance at least. Ball four, nice at bat Colby. Mathis. One on one down. Another full count, bottom of the order showing the big bats how it is done. Ball four, back to back walks, two on, one down. Escobar. Runners going. First pitch grounds it back to Feliz throw to first for the out. Two down two on for Johnson. YES KELLY, first pitch lines it to left and off the top of the wall and over, for home run 5-3 game. WOW. Now Jose, YES JOSE, gets hold of this one no doubt at all, all the way JOSE. 5-4 game. Jose smiling for the first time in several weeks. And rightly so. Lind, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging to end the inning but Jays are right back in this one. Feliz did not know what hit him. 53 pitch count.
Top 4th: Gonzalez, singles to Bautista in right. Gentry, one on grounds back to Hutchison, throw to Escobar into the outfield off his glove, error to Escobar, two on for Kinsler, nobody out. Grounds to Johnson, steps on second to get Gentry, throw wild at first and Gonzalez scores 6-4 .One down runner at second, should be out of the inning, Andrus. Fly ball to Bautista in right, great running catch over his shoulder. Very nice. two down. Young, First pitch fly ball to Bautista for third out. Pitch count 74 which is not bad considering.
Bottom 4th: Encarnacion, 3-0, high ball four, and Edwin walks. Thames one on, 0-2 count, strikes out swinging. One down for Lawrie. Fly ball to Cruz in right, a lot of noise but not far enough, two down. Rasmus. Wild pitch but Napoli throw gets Edwin at second for the third out leaving Colby at the plate.
Top 5th: Cruz, fly ball to Rasmus in centre, one down, Murphy, 3-1 count, singles to Bautista in right, one on, one down for Napoli. Vizquel thrown out of the game. Moaning from the dugout I guess. 3-1 count, grounds to Escobar, to Johnson, over to Lind pulls him off the bag no double play Two down runner at first. Moreland. 0-2 count strikes out swinging to end the inning with no further damage. 90 pitch count for Hutchison.
Bottom 5th: Rasmus, way outside, 2-2 count strikes out swinging, one down, Mathis, 3-0 count, ball four, another walk. Escobar, 1-2 count, NO he does it again, grounds to short, over to second on to first. yet another double play. Maybe we will see Vizquel playing short tomorrow because this guy is fast becoming a liability. 80 pitch count.
Top 6th: Gonzalez, Villanueva in Jays bullpen. Pulls it to Escobar, this time no problem on throw to Lind. one down. Gentry, grounds to Escobar, throw to Lind, two down. Kinsler fly ball to Rasmus, nice inning by Hutchison, three up and down.100 pitches but he gave six innings and at one stage in this game that did not look likely.
Bottom 6th: Kelly Johnson leading off. 3-0, inside ball four, takes a walk one on for Jose. Way outside. Inside 3-0, outside ball four, back to back walks and nobody out. Lind, that is it for Feliz. Robby Ross now pitching. Lefty lefty matchup. 2-2 count, Grounds to shirt, over to second on to first yet another double play killing. Johnson at third. Encarnacion with first base open. Grounds to sh0rt, throw to first to end the inning.
Top 7th: Villanueva, Andrus singles to Rasmus in centre, leadoff single. grounds to Escobar, over to Johnson, throw to Lind this time Jays get a double play. Two down for Cruz, fly ball to Bautista for third out. Neat inning.
Bottom 7th: Thames, grounds to Andrus at short, drops the ball, not throw, error to Andrus and Thames safe at first on the error. Lawrie, one on singles to left, two on nobody out. Rasmus, to load the bases still nobody out. Bunting and a great one in front of the plate, Napoli drops the ball and Colby streaks down that line and safe. Bases loaded nobody out. That is it for Ross. Alexi Ogando now pitching. Mathis, 1-2 count. This will do grounds to third, throw to second to get Rasmus, over to first, not in time to get Mathis. Thames scores, 6-5 game and two on for Escobar. Mathis running, grounds to short, throw to first to get Escobar, no chance for double play as Mathis was running on the play. Lawrie scores and this game is all tied up 6-6. Johnson, singles to centre, here comes Mathis to score 7-6 Jays. Bautista, Whoa, over the head of Jose, wild pitch Johnson to second. 2-2 count, lines out to right but a long out. Jays get three back and take the lead for first time tonight.
Top 8th: Villanueva still pitching. Murphy grounds to Johnson, throw to Lind one down. Napoli, 2-2 count, grounds to Johnson throw to Lind, two down. That is it for Villanueva. Darren Oliver to face Moreland, 0-2 count, full count, fouling them off here, finally fly ball to Thames in left, it took nine pitches but he did it. Good at bat by Moreland also.
Bottom 8th: Jays need some insurance here, one run makes us all nervous. Lind leading off strikes out swinging, one down for Encarnacion .Breaks his bat on this one, fly ball to Gentry in centre for the second out. Cordero warming up. Thames, two down. Grounds to short, throw to first to end the inning.
Top 9th: Cordero to try to close this one out. Many nervous Jays fans out there. Francisco has been very inconsistent and this is a one run game. Gonzalez, bounces to Lawrie at third, nice play to throw to Lind. One down. Beltre. Beltre pinch hitting for Gonzalez 2-2 count, strikes out swinging. Kinsler, two down. 0-2 count, singles into centre. Oh boy we have been here before. Andrus oh no, singles to Rasmus, Kinsler to third. Young. Singles to Rasmus, here comes Kinsler to score the run, 7-7 game. Boo birds are loud for Cordero and rightly so. Two on for Cruz. Grounds to Lawrie steps on the bag to get runner. Too little too late here by Cordero. He had them two down and two strikes and could not finish it off.
Bottom 9th: Mike Adams pitched last night. Lawrie leading off. 2-2 count, outside, full count. OH WOWEEEEEEE Lawrie hammers this one, to left centre and off the wall HOME RUN Lawrie. Talk about DRAMA... Jays earned this one. From 5-0 down they come back to within one strike of winning 7-6 and then after Texas ties it up Lawrie has walk off home run. That is a huge upset against a very good Texas team.
Texas outhit the Jays 11-8 tonight but those three home runs are all the difference. Texas had ten more at bats than the Jays. Top 4 in lineup had 4/8 hits tonight and with two home runs and 6 of the 8 RBIs. THAT is more like it POWER..
The excellent: Johnson 4RBIs and Bautista home run. Lawrie walk off home run. The heart on this team to come back from 5-0 and go ahead only to see lead lost and then come back again to win.
The very good: In the third, Rasmus and Mathis getting on base for Johnson home run to get Jays back in this game. Rasmus bunt to get it going in the 7th. Mathis hustle to avoid double play.
Not so good: Cordero another blown save, With two outs and two strikes ??? Jays grounds into 4 double plays, ouch ouch.... not good.
ERRORS, Escobar, Johnson.
