Jays power five home runs to beat Mets 14-5 but concerns grow re Romero control

Inter-League Play. Mets v Jays. Game one of three. Time for inter-league play and Jays (not the Yankees) have the Mets. Inter-league play historically has been a pain, but this is a new team, new era. Romero tonight after two lousy outings time for him to give Jays a good start to the weekend series. Changes today include Davis in centre for Rasmus. Jays did not miss Lawrie last night, Yan Gomes is doing more than adequately in his place. Lineups: Mets: Torres, Turner, Wright, Duda, Murphy, Hairston, Nieuwenhuis, Johnson, Cedeno and Jon Niese pitching. Jays: Johnson, Escobar, Bautista, Encarnacion, Arencibia, Thames, Gomes, Davis and Romero pitching. Weak lineup tonight from number five onwards. Top 1st: Torres, grounds to Gomes, throw to Encarnacion. One down for Turner, 0-2 count, lines to Johnson to make the catch, two down. Wright, 2-2 count, fly ball to right, misplayed by Bautista and bounces into the crowd for ground rule double. One on two down for Duda, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging to end the inning 20 pitches though. Romero has to be far more efficient. Bottom 1st: Johnson, full count, outside ball four, walks. Escobar, lines to right for Bautista. Nobody out. 0-2 count, takes strike three, not good Jose. One down. Encarnacion. 2-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down for Arencibia. THERE SHE GOES, drives it high to left and off the second deck facing, home run JP. 3-0 Jays. Francisco singles back up the middle. Thames with one on two down. 2-2 count, take strike three on the outside corner. 26 pitch count. Top 2nd: Murphy, 3-0 count, way outside, ball four, not good Romero just been staked to a three run lead, has to take advantage, just throw strikes. Hairston, 2-1, just unable to find the zone, like his last outing. 3-1, nowhere near. Lines it into the left field corner, Murphy to third and Hairston to second. Two in scoring position, tie run at the plate and nobody out yet. Horror story for Romero one again. Nieuwenhuis lucky here, pops it up to Escobar for the first out. Johnson, one down two on. Ball one, grounds to Escobar, throw to Encarnacion run scores, 3-1 Jays. Johnson did his job, two down and runner at third. Cedeno pops it up foul and for the third time tonight Bautista unable to get it. 2-2 count, strikes out swinging. Romero at 39 pitch count. He may only last five innings tonight at this rate. Bottom 2nd: Hitters have to get that run back and the three run advantage, Gomes, WOWEEE. Lines this one high into left, home run for Yan Gomes. First major league home run. Sweet stroke. 4-1 Jays. Lawrie who ??? Davis, full count, strikes out swinging. One down for Johnson. 3-1 count, low ball four. Second walk for Kelly tonight. Escobar, runner on one down. 1-2 count, there goes Kelly as Escobar strikes out, Kelly safe at second throw gets away but not far enough to move up. Bautista two down and runner in scoring position. Full count, singles into left, here comes Johnson, was running on the pitch and beats the throw Jose to second on the play, 5-1 Jays. , there goes Jose and throw goes into left. Jose safe. 3-0 count, lines it to centre for the out. 56 pitch count. Top 3rd: Perhaps Romero can now settle down with this big lead. Torres, full count. Low ball four. Leadoff walk, what is his problem? Turner, 2-2 count, whoa lucky break, grounds it back to Romero, throw to Escobar over to Encarnacion but Edwin pulled off the bag by Escobar throw but keeps his foot at the bag for the double play. Escobar escapes an error there. Not a good throw to first. Two down for Wright, hammers this one to left but Davis makes catch up against the wall. Close call. 52 pitch count. Bottom 3rd: Arencibia, YES JP hammers this one, to left and over the wall, back to back for JP. 6-1 Jays. Francisco, pops it up to at Murphy at second. Thames, singles into centre. Hit number seven tonight. Gomes, average .750! love it. 2-2 count, takes strike three. Two down for Rajai Davis. WOW he gets hold of this one and high into left home run Rajai. His first of the season. 8-1 Jays. Johnson, Mets bullpen working, Acosta. Full count pops it up into left for the out but Jays have blown this one open. Four home runs in the first three innings. Pitch count 77. Top 4th: Duda, 0-2 strikes out swinging, that’s better Ricky. One down for Murphy. Lines it to right centre for stand up double. One on one down. Hairston, 3-1 count, way outside and high, ball four, another walk, two on, one down for Nieuwenhuis. Another full count, whoa looked outside but called a strike, huge break there. Two down two on for Johnson. Grounds first pitch to Gomes at third, take it himself to the bag to get Murphy for third out. 69 pitches in three innings, not good for Romero. Bottom 4th: That is it for Niese. Manny Acosta now pitching. Escobar leading off. First pitch fly ball to Nieuwenhuis right for the out. Bautista, not in the home run hit parade tonight, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging. Two down for Encarnacion. Full count. Way high and inside. Walk to Edwin. Arencibia, strikes out swinging. Top 5th: Cedeno, 3-1, outside ball four, number nine hitter, walk number four for Romero. Not good at all. Torres, 1-2 count, pops it up to Bautista in shallow right. Turner, 2-0, Ricky does not need to let Turner get on base with Wright next to bat. Right, he heard me, ground ball to Johnson, throw to Escobar over to Edwin double play rescues him bigtime. 84 pitch count. Bottom 5th: Francisco leading off. Lines it to left, great catch by turned him around but made the catch. One down for Thames. Strikes out looking, two down for Yan Gomes. Full count, way outside. Walk to Gomes. Rajai Davis two down one on. 2-1 count. WHOA !!!!!! Rajai man, hammers this high to left and another home run, ghis second of the game and season. 10-1 Jays. Wow... Five home runs first time this season and without one from either Bautista or Encarnacion. That is unbelievable. Johnson, two down, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging to end this but Jays have two more. Top 6th: Wright, back to Romero, throw to Encarnacion, one down. Duda, 0-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down. Murphy, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging but Romero now on 99 pitches. Bottom 6th: Villanueva warming up in Jays bullpen. Escobar, singles into left off the glove of Valdespin at short. Error on play. Bautista, missing out on this party tonight. 3-1 count, ball four outside, two on for Encarnacion. 3-0 count, outside ball four to load the bases for two home run Arencibia. That is it for Acosta. Ramon Ramirez now pitching to Arencibia, bases loaded and nobody out. How would you like that assignment? 3-1 count, singles back up the middle, here comes Escobar flowed by Bautista, 12-1 Jays. Francisco with two on and nobody out. High fly ball to Torres in centre for the out. One down for Thames. Singles to right here comes Encarnacion, 13-1 Jays. Gomes, one down two on. 0-2 count. Lines it to Torres in centre, sac fly, here comes Arencibia to score, 14-1 Jays, Davis. Two down two on. Lines to right for catch by Nieuwenhuis to end the inning. Top 7th: Villanueva now pitching. Romero was the one disappointment tonight. For the third consecutive outing not good. Rasmus and Vizquel now in for Bautista and Johnson. Hairston strikes out swinging. Nieuwenhuis, 0-2 count, fly ball to Rasmus in centre, two down. Johnson, 3-0 count, high ball four. One on two down for Cedeno. Grounds to Gomes, long throw to Encarnacion at first to end the inning. Bottom 7th: Robert Carson now pitching. Vizquel leading off. Fly ball to Torres in centre, one down for Escobar. Full count, grounds to Valvespin at short, throw to first gets Escobar but he was hustling down the line running that one out, good to see. Rasmus with two down. Full count, outside ball four, Colby waits for the umpire call. Encarnacion with one on two down. Pops it up very high to Hairston in left for the third out. Top 8th: Crawford now pitching. Torres leading off. 3-1, high ball four. Turner, hits him. Seems hurt, here comes trainer and manager. Crawford staying in. Two on nobody out. Valdespin, Luis Perez warming up. Fly ball to Rasmus in centre, one down runners hold. That is it for Crawford. Perez now pitching. Duda one down with two on. 3-0 count, not good Luis. Low ball four. Bases loaded. Murphy, need a ground ball here Luis. 1-1 count, grounds to Gomes at third, throw to Edwin at first, two down run scores 14-2 Jays. Hairston two in scoring position. 2-2 count. Oh boy lines it high to right and over head of Davis into the bullpen, three run home run. 14-5 Jays. Nieuwenhuis. Strikes out looking to end the inning but not good for Perez. Bottom 8th: Rob Johnson now pitching. Arencibia pops up first pitch to Turner at first. Francisco pops it up to Murphy at second, two down, Thames, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging to end the inning. Top 9th: Cordero pitching. Johnson leading off. Bounces one to Escobar at short, throw to Encarnacion, one down. Cedeno, same play, to Escobar over to Edwin, two down. Torres, full count, low ball four. One on for Turner, 1-2 count. Fly ball to Davis in shallow right centre to end this one. Jays win big, very big.14-5. Excellent: Home run power. Jays hit five tonight but it is the three players who hit them that are the surprise. Newbie Gomes, hits his first major league home run. Arencibia two more tonight, and Rajai Davis hits his first of the season and then hits another. Good to see Bautista average way over 200. By the All-Star break Jose could be back to closer to normal average. Not good: Romero for third start in a row. Wild and unable to throw strikes. Four more walks which meant that he was out of the game at least one inning too early if not two. Problem is that Jays had to use four more pitchers as a result. Not good. Crawford also may have injured his back.
