Toronto v Detroit. Getaway day and early start 12.37.
Two rookies Romero and Porcello both with first major league start. Porcello was in high school in 2007. That is young.
Lineups: Jays (Cito makes a change !!) Scutaro, Hill, Rios, Wells, Lind, Bautista, Overbay, Barrett, Snider and Romero pitching. Rolen and Barajas get a rest. Too bad we can’t see Millar in there.
Tigers: Granderson, Thames, Ordonez, Cabrera, Guillen, Inge, Treanor, Santiago, Everett and Porcello pitching.
The good: Lind and Snider five hits. Bautista and Overbay with two each. Hill and Scutaro home runs and another from Lind. Romero gave six good innings. Downs throwing nothing but strikes in the ninth. Bullpen of Carslon, League and Downs holding this one for Romero. Lind breaks his 0-7 streak with base hit in the 2nd. Lyle looking much better today.
The bad: Twelve innings without a run from Jays hitters. Jays cannot bring in Overbay from third with one out.
The awful: Rios and Wells 0-8 today and only one hit each in last two games. 2-16 OUCH. Come on Cito don’t let this go too far as it did all season long last year.
Overbay 1-12, his problem is far too cautious letting good pitches go, finally singles up the middle. Barrett first at bat this season, with two on and two out leaves his bat on his shoulder. Not good Mike.
Rough third inning for Romero gives up two but an error by Bautista moving in front of Scutaro enabled the run.
Snider finally an hour before his first at bat but singles up the middle to lead off. Scutaro pops it up first pitch (no thought of moving Snider over with a bunt, not Cito’s style). Rios grounds weakly back to pitcher.
Now twelve innings without a run. There is no way Jays are going anywhere with that type of offence. Barrett breaks the drought with an rbi single. First five hits from the bottom five. Nothing from the top four.
Snider does not like that pitch in the dirt. Cannot hold back. That was like his first at bat against Miner yesterday. He will have to work on that this year.
Fifth inning. Finally get to Porcello Hill another HR off LF foul pole. To tie this one up. 2-2. Rios and Wells both strike out . 0-6 today.
Sixth: Romero now on 80 pitches , may be last inning unless he has a quick one. Nice double play helps him. Will get one more inning.
Bottom sixth: Lind at bat, there she goes. Another HR… to CF. Jays take the lead for first time. 3-2. Bautista second hit. That’s it for Porcello 89 pitches. He did a good job. Nate Robertson pitching. Overbay showing bunt ? grounds to second, Bautista out at second. Barrett with Overbay on strikes out. Snider at bat, has he learned anything ? Yes, lays off a couple of low pitches. Doubles off right field wall and Overbay beats throw, great slide by Lyle with his foot under the block at plate. 4-2. Jays. That’s it for Robertson. Rincon pitching to Scutaro 0-3 today, as are Rios and Wells. That’s better Marco, gets hold of this one into LF stands, two runs score. 6-2 Jays. Hill again pops it up but good inning for Jays hitters.
Top seventh: Carlson pitching. gets the first two but now Granderson on. League now finishing off.
Bottom seventh: Rios and Wells hitless 0-4 called third strike. Wells grounds out. 0-8 today between them. Lind another hit his third today.
Eighth: League pitching, Cabrera, this is the guy they need out has been on fire all week. Drives it to Wells. That’s it. Don’t want to see him again. Inge another hot one with HR in each of the three games, fly ball to Wells.
Bottom eighth: Overbay doubles over Granderson’s head, similar hit to last night when Granderson had it at the wall, this time in left centre just wide of Granderson. Lyle getting in the groove now. Barrett fly ball to Grandsrson to move Overbay to third. One down for Snider. Grounds to second not deep enough for Lyle to score. Scutaro now fly ball to CF. Not good team have to bring in the guy at third with one out.
Top ninth: Downs pitching bottom of the order. Treanor, strikes out. Santiago strikes out. Everett hit, Granderson strikes out. Very nice finish Scott.
Jays finish opening home stand 3-1. Cito will take it as they head out of town. All these wins count in September. Orioles are losing right now to Yankees if that holds up Jays are number one. Enjoy.....
