Jays win big behind great outing by Cecil and backed by Lewis and home run power of Buck and Wells.

Padres v Jays series finale and decider. Wednesday June 16.

Jays 2-6 on this nine game road trip. Almost 9,000 km road trip. Petco Field has to be one of the most attractive ballparks. Not a big crowd although to be fair it is mid-week afternoon game. Jays would love to win this one and take the series and fly home tonight a lot happier, but we should remember Padres are division leaders, and are playing at home and Jays are tired from this long road trip.

Lineups: Jays: Lewis, Hill, Lind, Wells, Gonzalez, Overbay, Buck, Encarnacion, Romero.
Padres: Eckstein, Headley, Adrian Gonzalez, Hairston, Hundley, Denorfia, Cunningham, Zawadzki, Correia.

Pitching: Correia v Romero.

Top 1st: Lewis leading off, yes Fred lines this one to centre, leadoff triple. Hill fly ball to Denorfia in centre. Not enough for Lewis to come home. Lind, grounds to Eckstein at second throw to Gonzalez at first to get Lind but here comes Lewis to score first run. 1-0 Jays. Wells with two down grounds to Gonzalez at first, flip to pitcher Correia covering to end this inning.
Bottom 1st: Padres playing catch up. Eckstein leading off, grounds to Encarnacion at third, throw to Overbay. One down Headley grounds to Hill at second on to Overbay, two down. Gonzalez strikes out.

Top 2nd: Adrian Gonzalez leading off pops up to Eckstein at second, one down. Overbay full count and walks. One on one down for Buck, grounds to third base Headley throw to Eckstein at second on to first double play ball. That was quick.
Bottom 2nd: Hairston leading off singles to right. Hundley fly ball to Wells in centre. Denorfia singles to centre, Hairston to second. Two on one down for Cunningham strikes out. Zawadzki infield single bounces to short, Romero gets to it and throw to first gets away from Overbay. Here comes Hairston 1-1 Game Denorfia goes to third. Error to Romero, that was costly. Pitcher Correia with runner at third, lines out to Hill but Padres have tied it up.

Top 3rd: Encarnacion grounds to short Zawadzki throw to Gonzalez at first, one down. Romero strikes out. Cito will be glad when this inter-league play is over and his pitchers can stay away from swinging. Lewis with two down, singles to centre 2-2 tonight. Hill, there goes Fred steals second. Hill grounds to short Zawadzki throw to first Gonzalez to get Hill and end the inning.
Bottom 3rd: Eckstein leading off grounds to Encarnacion throw to Overbay one down.
Headley same play, grounds to Encarnacion throw to Overbay. Two down for Adrian Gonzalez singles to Lewis in right. Hairston fly ball to Lewis in right for the out.

Top 4th: Lind leading off fly ball to Denorfia in centre. Wells one down, fly ball to Denorfia in centre. Gonzalez two down same play, fly ball to Denorfia in centre. Denorfia overworked here. Cirreia 54 pitches.
Bottom 5th: Hundley leading off, walks, Denorfia grounds to Hill flip to Gonzalez, no chance for two. Denorfia safe at first, one down one on for Cunningham 0-2 count. Wild pitch, Denorfia moves to second 2-2 count. Strikes out swinging two down for Zawadski, intentional walk to get to pitcher Correia. Has two RBIs though this season. 1-2 count. Strikes out swinging. Number four for today. 76 pitches

Top 5th: Overbay leading off.1-2. Full count. That’s better Lyle, singles up the middle. Buck with one on. WHOA this one is HAMMERED and I mean hammered into third deck off the wall of the warehouse, that was HUGE… and would still be travelling if that wall had not stopped it,and of course two runs score , Jays 3-1. 395 feet given but that is very conservative and that ball hit the wall and was still travelling. Encarnacion grounds to third throw to first. One down, Romero 0-2, strikes out looking, two down. Lewis, doubles off the wall in centrefield, single double and triple already, Fred’s night should have two chances for the cycle. Hill, this will do it, Aaron singles into centre, here comes Fred with his speed scores easily, 4-1 Jays. Lind, 2-0 count. 2-2 strikes out looking. 80 pitches.
Bottom 5th: Eckstein, grounds to Hill, throw to Overbay for the out. Headley, 3-0 count. Ball four, not good Ricky. Gonzalez, one on one down. Ball one, six in a row, 2-0 now. Misses again 3-0 there’s a strike. But Ricky needs more than one. Count full, fouling them off here. Five in a row. Gets him strikes out swinging. Ten pitch at bat though. Cito will need his bullpen very soon. Two down for Scott Hairston grounds to Overbay at first throw to second for the third out. 93 pitches, may get one more inning in.

Top 6th: Correia still out there. Wells leading off, another ofer night, there we go Vernon, finally, gets hold of this one home run to centre left into Padres bullpen. 5-1 Jays. Gonzalez singles to left, mound conference here. Webb and Mujica up in bullpen. Overbay with one and nobody out. Singles to right, Gonzalez to second and the booing continues. Two on for Buck. Here comes Manager, Bud Black, that is it for Correia. Ryan Webb now pitching. 2-2 count. Strikes out, one down for Encarnacion, lines to second flip to shortstop and double play ball. Catching Gonzalez off the bag.
Bottom 6th: Hundley leading off. 0-2 full count. Grounds to Gonzalez, throw to Overbay for the first out. Denorfia, same play, two down. Cunningham with two down. Singles to Wells in centre. One on two down for Zawadzki, grounds to Gonzalez, throw to Overbay for third out. Same play for all three outs. That should be it for Romero, has done his job. 108 pitches. Over to the bullpen. Probably Camp, Downs and Gregg if necessary but then again Jays could go a run burst here.

Top 7th: Mujica pitching. Wise pinch hitting for Romero but he was finished anyway. 0-2 count, Pops it up to left, one down. Lewis, going for the cycle. Has already done it in his career, impressive. Needs a home run, come on Fred. 3-0 not giving him anything to get those arms extended. Count full, don’t take it Fred. Strikes out swinging. Two down for Hill. Pops up to centre for third out.
Bottom 7th: Downs taking the seventh. Pinch hitting for Mujica, Jerry Hairston jr. leading off. Grounds hard back to Downs, throw to Overbay, one down. Eckstein, singles back through Downs into centre. One on one down. Headley, 3-0 count. Come on Scott, 3-1, full count, grounds to Gonzalez at short, throw to Hill to get one throw not in time to Overbay for two. Two down one on for Adrian Gonzalez. 0-2, 2-2, gets him strike three swinging.

Top 8th: Mujica pitching. Lind leading off. Pops up to left, one down for Wells, grounds up the middle to Eckstein, throws him out at first. Two down for Gonzalez, swings at one way outside halfway to first base. Three up and down.
Bottom 8th: Camp pitching. Reed in left for Lind. Scott Hairston, 0-2 count. Strikes out on a ball that moved three feet going away from him. Nice pitch. Hundley. High fly ball to the left centre wall for Vernon to make the catch. Two down. Denorfia, full count, grounds to Encarnacion throw to Overbay for third out. Very nice job by Camp. Will it be Gregg or maybe Frasor to finish this one off ?

Top 9th: Heath Bell the closer pitching 17 saves. Overbay leading off. 2-2 count. Ball three high. Ball four and walks. One on for Buck, 0-2 count. Singles to right centre, Overbay to third, Buck has to stop at first. Two on for Encarnacion, 0-2 count, 2-2, grounds to third, throw to second on to first, Buck safe at second. Eckstein came off the bag on the throw, Buck out at first. Two in scoring position, for Reed one down. 2-0 count, 3-0, ball four, bases loaded for Lewis with chance for cycle again. Come on Fred. 2-0 count. 3-1, takes it full count, singles to left, here comes Overbay, here comes Buck running on the pitch. 7-1 Jays great at bat by Lewis, four hit night and that’s it for Bell. New pitcher Gallagher, two on and only one down. Hill with runners at first and second. Camp on deck if needed. Grounds to Gallagher throw to second on to first double play ball to end this inning. That’s good in one respect as it means Camp does not have to stand out there.
Bottom 9th: Camp to try to finish this one. Cunningham leading off. Tallet and Frasor up in bullpen. 0-2 count, strikes out looking. One down for Tony Gwynn pinch hitting doubles into left. Hairston jr. lines it to Wells in centre, two down Gwynn has to hold. Eckstein grounds back to Camp flip to Overbay for the third out and

Jays win big here tonight. Win the series and bats are booming again. Jays can fly home happy with this excellent win. The road trip finished 3-6 but they finished on the right positive note.

The excellent: Jays hitters, Romero, Buck mammoth home run to break it open. Lewis four hit night.

Good: Strong fielding from left side of the infield. Tampa and Yankees with Burnett pitching losing tonight to the Braves and Philadelphia, chance for Jays to get one back from the leaders ands stay with Boston.

The bad: ? Not tonight.
