Great win by Jays behind Marcum's gem and hitting by Buck, Hill and Overbay

Jays v Padres. Monday June 14.
Game one of three.
Another tough series for Jays. Maybe the hitters will find their bats. They have been dismal so far on this 1-5 road trip. It would be easy to get swept here as Padres are no pushover. Leading the division eleven games over .500. Marcum going tonight but even he needs run support. Will he get it? Garland pitching. And so it goes on. Cards are stacked against the Jays the way they are playing. Great stadium here looks like a mini Fenway with all the corners and odd pieces jutting out and integrates that warehouse he way they did in Baltimore,
Cito shaking up the lineup. No Lind, no Lewis. Instead DeWayne Wise gets a well deserved chance playing in left and leading off.
Lineups: Jays: Wise, Hill, Bautista, Wells, Gonzalez, Overbay, Buck, Encarnacion, Marcum.
Padres: Eckstein, Headley, Gonzalez, Scott Hairston, Torrealba, Venable, Hairston jr. Garland.
Top 1st: Wise, nice at bat fouls a few off and then singles up the middle. Now some speed on first. Hill, a lot of pitches but missing badly and popping them up everywhere, try driving it Aaron. Fly ball to centre for the out. Bautista 2-2 count. Count full, does he swing? Yes but foul, almost takes head off the ball girl in left. Strikes out, two down. These guys are unable to move a runner with leadoff man on base. Cito must go nuts in that dugout. What does it take? Wells, .292 average. Way down in the last couple of weeks. Wise might be going this at bat if only to test the catcher’s arm, if he is out Vernon will lead off second. nothing to lose. Strikes out swinging down and away off the plate. Same old Vernon, scouting report does not change. Garland 26 pitch inning but Jays don’t score so he did his job. Wise didn’t even move from first, that is not a good start.
Bottom 1st: Eckstein leading off, old friend of Jays. Pops it up to Wise in left for first out. Headley, grounds to Overbay at first to make the second out. (Adrian) Gonzalez this guy can hit, 14 home runs. Pops it up to Wells, Marcum does nice job to start this one. Nine pitches.
Top 2nd: (Alex) Gonzalez, strikes out, Overbay, long single to left, no chance for two. One on one down for Buck. One of the few Jays who has been hitting ( .400) on this road trip. Full count here. NO doubt about this one, hammers it into left field corner and over the wall. Here comes Lyle, here comes Buck, home run 2-0 Jays. Encarnacion with one down. Strikes out swinging at ball off the plate, on three pitches. Marcum takes one, takes two, 2-0 count. 2-2. Full count on seven pitches, making Garland work here. And gets a walk, way to go Shaun, nine pitch walk, if only Vernon could take a note here. Wise, now with one on and two down. Wise doubles into right corner, poor Shaun had to hustle there, not used to this. Hill now can he do something? Conference on the mound. Garland having a rough time so far. This will do it doubles in to right to the wall, here comes Marcum, here comes Hill and Jays have given Marcum a four run lead. 4-0 Jays. Bautista has to keep it going here if only to give Marcum a breather after all that. Jays have their biggest total of runs on this road trip at four. Pops it up to the catcher to end this one but Jays strike first. Pitch count for Garland now at 60 after two ouch, ouch…. And kudos to Marcum for nine of them
Bottom 2nd: Marcum has a nice lead to work with now. Scott Hairston leading off. Lazy pop up to Gonzalez at short for the out. Torrealba, Grounds slow roller to Gonzalez, tough throw not in time. One on one down. Venable. Grounds to Hill throw to Gonzalez to get Venable at second, no chance for two. Jerry Hairston jr. bunting, with two down. Runner going great throw by Buck and gets him at second. Buck doing it all tonight. That was a great throw. 22 pitches for Marcum and looks no worse for wear after that running on the bases.
Top 3rd: Wells leading off. First pitch fly ball to centre for the out. He just cannot get in a comfortable hitting groove. Gonzalez, 3-1 count and ball four to walk him. Vernon note please. Overbay with one on and one down, strikes out swinging but it took six pitches. Jays hitters for the most part tonight very patient. Buck, 3-1 count. Ball four, two on two down for Encarnacion. Gonzalez getting in the head of Garland out there at second. Good to see, take every opportunity you can to shake that concentration. Another full count, strikes out swinging over ball four. Ah well at least Marcum could get a break here although he misses chance to hit with bases loaded, and he will have to lead off the next. Garland now at 84 pitches. Bullpen will be working soon.
Bottom 3rd: Jerry Hairston Jr. Gets hold of this one a huge moon shot to left, just inside foul pole. 4-1 Jays. Gwynn grounds to Gonzalez throw to Overbay one down for Garland who has four hits this season. 3-1 Marcum missing outside. That’s better full count. Pops it up to Bautista in very shallow right. Two down for Eckstein, great curve ball 0-2, full count, singles up the middle, one on two down for Headley, 1-2 will Eckstein be going here? No and Headley strikes out swinging. Marcum pitch count 42.
Top 4th: Marcum leading off. Let’s see what he does this time. Takes strike one, good swing at this one to fly ball to right. Nice swing Shaun bragging rights in the bullpen, Wise, strikes out swinging, two down for Hill. First pitch pop up to centre for third out. Garland gets a quick inning for a change and will be out again. Pitch count at 92.
Bottom 4th: Adrian Gonzalez, oh boy lines this one to left just over the fence, I think Wise had a chance at that one it is a very low fence. Maybe not on the replay but 4-2 Jays. That left field fence appears very close and low, Jays hitters should be zeroing in on it. Vernon note that is your favourite spot when you are hitting. Hairston grounds first pitch to Hill throw to Overbay for the out. One down for Torrealba, grounds to Gonzalez, throw to Overbay two down. Venable strikes out on three but Padres get another back. Jays hitters need to chase Garland now and get into the bullpen early this game. 51 pitches for Shaun.
Top 5th: Bautista leading off. Full count, high fly ball to left centre but that is almost 400 feet Jose, get it around a bit to left. One down for Wells, pops up to right, two down, Vernon to me is looking as he did last season, just unable to get his pitch selection right. Swinging at the bad pitches and letting good ones go. Gonzalez, full count and walks, Overbay with one on. Lyle singles to right Gonzalez all the way to third. Lyle second hit tonight. Buck, with two on and two down. Thatcher now warming up (quickly) in bullpen. 0-2 count. grounds to third throw to second to get a sliding Overbay to end this one. Jays leave two on and should be facing a new pitcher next inning. Garland 114 pitches.
Bottom 5th: Jerry Hairston jr. leading off, pops it up to shallow right. Long run for Bautista to make the catch one down for Gwynn, lines it to Vernon in centre, two down. Cunningham, pinch hitter for Garland. 0-2 count grounds to Gonzalez at shirt throw to Overbay for third out. Nice ten pitch inning for Marcum. Pitch count 61.
Top 6th: Encarnacion leading off. New pitcher Mujica, strikeout pitcher and has not walked much. Singles into centre, Marcum bunting? Yes, and does great bunt, no throw to second, goes to first to get Marcum, Encarnacion at second for Wise, strikes out swinging. Hill with two down and one in scoring position. Jays 1/4 tonight with runners in scoring position and have left six on base, yes Aaron this will do it, doubles into left field corner here comes Encarnacion. Second double for Aaron tonight. Things are looking up for him. 5-2 Jays. Bautista with runner at second grounds to third throw to first for the out but Jays have added another for Marcum.
Bottom 6th: Eckstein leading off fouling a few off here. Fly ball to Wells in centre for the out. One down for Headley, lines it to Wells in centre, Vernon busy out there tonight with the glove at least. Two down for Gonzalez, pops up to (Alex) Gonzalez to end the inning. 75 pitches. I think Cito may need bullpen tonight for the ninth. Gregg did not pitch in Colorado.
Top 7th: Vernon to lead off the inning. Swinging or taking? If he could get one to left it would be over that low wall with his power. Swinging and grounds to short throw to first for the out. Gonzalez, lifts this one gently to shallow centre in no man’s land, drops and Alex safe at first. Overbay 2-3 tonight. 2-0 count. Grounds to second get Gonzalez in run down to double up with Lyle.
Bottom 7th: Scott Hairston leading off. Singles to left. One on for Torrealba, No no no… grounds to Gonzalez could be two but fumbles the ball and both runners safe. That was double play ball. Oh boy. Venable. No even worse, single to centre just drops in front of Vernon. Bases loaded and no outs. Jerry Hairston jr. Downs and Camp now working in bullpen pops it up to Wise in very shallow left no chance for runner. One down bases still loaded for Gwynn. Grounds to Encarnacion throw to first to get Gwynn, runner scores 5-3 Jays. Salazar pinch hitting for Mujica two down with runners at second and third. Fly ball to Wise in left. Marcum 91 pitches and Gonzalez owes him big there.
Top 8th: Can Jays hitters help Marcum out here? He has pitched his heart out tonight and also contributed with the bat, time for someone to give him a lift. Gallagher now pitching. Walks a lot, 16 walks and 16 strikeouts, Vernon please note. Buck leading off. 2-2 count. Way high full count. WAY TO GO John, going the opposite field another home run, number two tonight. 6-3 Jays. Encarnacion, 3-1 count. Full, lines it to centre for second out. Marcum, no Fred Lewis pinch hitting that’s it for Shaun tonight. Way outside, count full. Takes strike three, two down. Wise, 2-4 tonight, lines it to right, just foul almost a home run, strikes out swinging. Jays get back to three run lead.
Bottom 8th: Downs has to close Padres down here. Eckstein leading off grounds to Gonzalez, no mistake here, throw to Overbay to get Eckstein. One down for Headley and again great play by Gonzalez, Headley grounds to short very quick throw to Overbay for second out., (Adrian) Gonzalez 3-1 count. Swings over it, full count, two down. Strikes him out swinging. Great inning by Downs and Gonzalez.
Top 9th: Can Jays add one here? Hill to lead it off. Gallagher still pitching. 0-2 count. Way outside, I can see why he walks a lot. This will do lines it into left field corner, another double for Aaron his third tonight. Bautista, lines it softly over head of second, Hill to third on the play. Two on and no outs for Wells. Down and away Vernon, you know what they are doing here. Takes ball one inside. Takes right down the middle. That was the pitch, lines to short, runners hold. When things are going bad Vernon they go all the way with you. One down for Gonzalez, Gregg ready in bullpen. Give him another one here. Pops it up to first I don’t believe it, two down, they can’t bring in Aaron from third with no outs. Cito is going to have to get this crew bunting including Vernon. Pitching change, lefty match up for Lyle. Thatcher. Lots of strikeouts, and no room for error for Lyle. 2-0, 3-0 all outside, does Lyle have the green light ? takes one. Count full, strikes out looking and that was awful at bats by Gonzalez, Wells and Overbay. Moral victory to the Padres there and Jays hitters had better pray that they have enough.
Bottom 9th: Scott Hairston leading off, Gregg pitching. 3-1 count, here we go. Fouls it off, full count. Walks him. Cito grinding his teeth along with all Jays fans. One on for Torrealba, 2-2 count, Strikes him out looking he does NOT like that call, in the umpire’s face, ejected from the game, now Bud Black out there all to get Padres and fans fired up. One down one on for Venable, strikes out, two down for Jerry Hairston jr. strike one, strike two, grounds to Hill, throw to Overbay for third out and Jays win huge here. Twelve hits and six runs and could have should have had more.
Padres are leading the West and Jays have pulled off a huge victory here.
The very good: Marcum with his seven innings pitching plus a nine pitch walk in the second, and a bunt to get Encarnacion in scoring position for Hill’s RBI double. Buck with the two run home run to get it started and his second in the eighth to give a three run lead. Hill a two run double. Overbay and Hill multi hit games and both starting to get hot. AND Jays get something back on Jays, Yankees and Boston all idle today.
The very bad. Top of the ninth with Hill at third and no outs and Bautista, Wells and Overbay could not bring him in. Not even a sac fly or bunt. Jays next manager has to get this team to do these little things.
