Game two of three. Toronto v San Diego. Tuesday June 15.
Jays had a great win last night, well earned through excellent pitching by Marcum and good hitting three doubles from Hill great to see him finally coming around. John Buck with another multi-homer game. Wise also showed some talent with two hits and always a threat with his speed on base. Downside still looking for Wells to get it together and for the big bats to produce on a consistent basis. Failure once more with runners in scoring position and the small game. That will have to wait for a new Manager. Tonight Lind is back in the lineup. Adam has been another missing bat. Bullpen did well last night. Jays two back of Boston. Tampa, Yankees and Red Sox are all winning tonight so Jays will have to win just to stay in same place.
Lineups: Jays: Bautista back in leadoff spot, Hill, Lind, Wells, Gonzalez, Overbay, Buck, Encarnacion, Cecil.
Padres: Eckstein, Headley, Gonzalez, (Scott) Hairston, Hundley, Denorfia, Jerry Hairston Jr, Cunningham, Latos.
Pitching: Cecil v Latos. Jays facing an excellent young pitcher tonight in Latos who beat the New York Mets last outing.
Top 1st: Bautista leading off. Fly ball to Cunningham in right, one down. Hill, first pitch same play to Cunningham, two down for Lind. 0-2 count, 2-2, strikes out swinging. Three up and down for Latos. 11 pitches.
Bottom 1st: Eckstein leading off, 2-2 count. grounds to Gonzalez throw to Overbay for the out. Headley with one down, 0-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down for (Adrian) Gonzalez, grounds to Hill, throw to Overbay for third out. Three up and down for Padres. 13 pitches for Cecil.
Top 2nd: Wells leading off, we never know with Vernon these days he has lost his early season form but is definitely not alone in that. Lines first pitch to centre, one down. Gonzalez, 0-2 count, strikes out swinging. Two down for Overbay, 2-2 count. Grounds to second, throw to first for third out. Jays go even more quietly than the first inning. This looks like a short night for Jays hitters at this rate. Pitch count 21.
Bottom 2nd: (Scott) Hairston, leading off, 2-2 count, pop up to Bautista in right, one down. Hundley 2-2 count, full, lines this one off the wall in left centre, one on, one down for Denorfia, 2-0 count, misses, 3-0, Ball four. Jerry Hairston Jr, with two on. Need a ground ball here Brett. Grounds up the middle off Cecil glove, diving save by Hill but no chance for throw at second as Gonzalez backing him up. Bases loaded for Cunningham, OH NO, hammers it to centre over the wall grand slam, 4-0 Padres. Latos still only one down. Strikes out. Eckstein, 3-0, Cecil rattled here. Ball four, now they go out to talk to him, a few minutes too late coach. Headley, 2-2 count.grounds to Encarnacion at third, throw to second to get Eckstein to end this one. Jays playing catch up. 49 pitch count. Ouch bigtime.
Top 3rd: Buck leading off, very small crowd here tonight for NL leading team. Grounds to third, nice diving stop and throw to first to get Buck, one down for Encarnacion 0-2 horrible swing and miss by Edwin. Grounds to short, quick throw to first for second out. Cecil not getting much of a break here, strikes out. Jays rolling over tonight. Pitch count Latos 31 pitches for three innings.
Bottom 3rd: Gonzalez, grounds to Overbay, flip to Cecil nice play Brett to make the out at first. One down for (Scott) Hairston, doubles to right. Hundley with one down and one on, singles to right, two on for Denorfia, runner at third. Fly ball to Lind in left, runner tags and scores. 5-0 Padres. Jerry Hairston Jr. with two down, oh what a stupid mistake by Padres, Hundley, gets picked off running before pitch thrown, an easy rundown that was bigtime bush league. His Manager will not be happy with that and rightly so. Pitch count 63. Could have and should have been much worse.
Top 4th: Bautista leading off. Pops up to Eckstein, one down. Hill, takes first pitch, 2-0 count. 3-0 Jays have no choice now but to grind this one out and get back in it. 3-1, fly ball to centre, two down for Lind. That’s better, doubles to left corner, one on for Wells. Can he do anything here? Ball gets away and Lind moves to third. Single will do it Vernon, just put bat on the ball. 1-2 count. Has to swing now. Hits him, looked like the shirt. Two on for Gonzalez, same thing Alex, just a single is fine. 1-1, 1-2, 2-2. That’s it, all you have to do, lines it softly into centre, here comes Lind to score, 5-1 Padres, still two on and two down for Overbay, singles into left here comes Vernon 5-2. Gonzalez to third on the play. Buck with two on and two down. 0-2 count. Strikes out but Jays are fighting back and showing that Latos is human. 58 pitch count.
Bottom 4th: Cecil should be encouraged by that but he has to hold Padres here. Hairston jr. leading off. 2-2 count lines it to Overbay, great catch Lyle. One down for Cunningham, hammers this to centre, bounces over the wall, ground rule double, Latos with one down. Strikes out, two down for Eckstein. 2-0 count, 3-1, grounds it to Encarnacion at third, throw to Overbay for the out. Cecil escapes damage here and gives his offence a shot now. 78 pitches for Cecil.
Top 5th: Encarnacion leading off. Lines it to centre, nice diving catch by Denorfia robbing Edwin of at least a double there, one down for Cecil. Strikes out on three. Bautista with two down, just under this one but nice swing high pop up to left for the out. 68 pitches.
Bottom 5th: Headley leading off, grounds to Encarnacion at third throw to Overbay for the out. One down for Adrian Gonzalez 3-1 count, full, lines it softly into shallow centre, one on one down for (Scott) Hairston first pitch fly ball to Lind in left, two down for Hundley bounces it back to Cecil, throws a strike to Overbay, bang-bang play to get him very close. 92 pitches for Cecil. Might get one more in.
Top 6th: Hill leading off, three doubles last night but nothing tonight. Pops this one up to Eckstein at second. One down for Lind, gets the height and distance but pulls it foul down right field line. Try again Adam, count full, Strikes out swinging. Two down for Vernon, grounds it to third throw to first for the out. 80 pitches for Latos.
Bottom 6th: Denorfia leading off, 3-0 count, full count, pops it up to Lind in left one down for Jerry Hairston Jr, Casey Janssen ready in bullpen, Cecil over the 100 pitches. Grounds to Encarnacion throw to Overbay two down. Cunningham 1-2 count, strikes him out, very nice Brett, he would love that ending after Cunningham had hit that grand slam and a double off him in his two previous at bats.
Top 7th: Gonzalez leading off, we need hits and runs here friends. That will do Alex, singles into centre. Overbay, pops up the first pitch to left, one down, Why is that teams that Jays play do not swing at all the first pitches Jays hitters do ? Patience is not a Jays word. Padres bullpen working quickly. Buck, takes third strike, two down. Gonzalez still standing on first. Encarnacion, guessed wrong on that pitch swings over it and late, count full on a wild pitch high and in. At least Alex can run here. Ball four, not over yet. Two on two down for pinch hitter Fred Lewis, Fred get hold of one here please. Here comes Bud Black. That’s it for Latos. Lefty Thatcher to face Lewis. Strikes out swinging.
Bottom 7th: Purcey pitching. Zawadzki, pinch hitting for Thatcher first pitch fly ball to Bautista one down for Eckstein, 2-2 count. Lines it right at Gonzalez nice catch Alex, two down for Headley, 3-0 count, Ball four, one on two down. Adrian Gonzalez, 1-2 count. There goes Headley but Gonzalez grounds it right at Overbay to step on bag for third out.
Top 8th: Jays running out of at bats to get back into this one. Mike Adams pitching. Top of the order, Bautista, long drought since last home run Jose. 2-2 count. Strikes out swinging. One down for Hill, grounds up the middle, off the glove of Hairston at short safe at first no throw. Lind 2-0 count. 2-2, grounds to second but Hill running on the play and Aaron safe at second. Throw to first to get Lind. Two down. Wells with runner Hill in scoring position, Time to earn the big $ Vernon. 1-2 count, down and away, strikes out swinging. Awful.
Bottom 8th: Janssen now pitching. (Scott) Hairston leading off. Pops it up to Overbay leaning over the fence at first, nice catch Lyle, one down for Hundley, doubles past diving Encarnacion into left corner, Bell ready in Padres bullpen. Denorfia, perfect grounds to Encarnacion looks runner back and throw to first for the out. Two down for Jerry Hairston Jr, singles into shallow centre, here comes the run, 6-2 Padres. Cunningham the last guy we want to see here. Runner going and safe on the throw. Black not realizing that Jays will never score four runs in the ninth. Trying for another. 3-0 count, walk him Casey. Ball four. Safest move there. Gwynn with two on and two down. 3-1 count, loading them up here ? Ball four, bases loaded. Eckstein. Singles into shallow right, just out of reach of Overbay, two runs score 8-2 Padres. And Janssen probably looking at AAA Vegas for his next trip. Cito is getting tired of the bullpen blowing these games and so are we all. Headley grounds to Hill, throw to first for the out but Janssen has blown this wide open and put it way out of reach.
Top 9th: Will Jays hitters make a fight of it? Ryan Webb now pitching, not a save situation. Gonzalez, leading off and swinging away, that answers my question. Grounds to short throw to first for the out. One down for Overbay, 3-0 count. ball four, Lyle walks, but Jays need six to even tie this one. Buck, 2-2 count. Ball three, way outside. Strikes out on ball four, two down for Encarnacion. Fly ball to left to end this one. Disappointing inning by Janssen who effectively put it out of reach.
The good: Cecil after the one bad inning. Overbay, Encarnacion and Gonzalez on defence,
The bad: Janssen definitely. Wells, another horrible game with the bat, is just not in the games at all with poor pitch selection, no timing and seemingly no patience.
Even worse: Boston, Yankees and Rays all win tonight.
