Marcum v Weaver
Jays hitters flat again tonight for much of the game until the bottom of the eighth when Ruiz gets them going with a home run to centre, followed by Adam Lind two run blast to second deck in right. Unfortunately inning ends with Lyle striking out leaving Vernon at second and that was as close as Jays would get, going one, two three in the ninth.
Weaver had eight strikeouts but too many of them left Jays hitters looking at strike three.
Top 1st: Aybar strikes out. Abreu grounds back to Marcum throw to Overbay at first. Hunter same play, grounds back to Marcum throw to first base Overbay.
Bottom 1st: Bautista strikes out. Gonzalez grounds to third Izturis to Morales at first, two down. Lind strikes out.
Top 2nd: Matsui singles to centre. Morales grounds to Overbay throw to second to get Matsui. Rivera strikes out. Izturis fouls out to Gonzalez.
Bottom 2nd: Wells, there she goes home run on first pitch, no doubt about that one, Vernon got hold of it all. Jays take early lead 1-0. Overbay strikes out. ( he struck out four times last night, Lyle’s average is sinking very fast, what is wrong with him ???) Buck strikes out. Ruiz fly ball to Hunter in centre.
Top 3rd: Kendrick grounds to McDonald throw to Overbay, one down. Mathis full count and walks. Aybar at bat. Mathis going and steals second, Gonzalez's throwing error, moves Mathis to third. Aybar singles to centre, here comes Mathis 1-1. Abreu strikes out. Hunter pops up to McDonald at second to end the inning but Angels get another.
Bottom 3rd: Snider fly ball to Rivera in left. One down. McDonald strikes out. Bautista strikes out. Much too easy for Weaver so far and Jays hitters do not look as if they have anything tonight.
Top 4th: Matsui strikes out. Morales gets hold of this one and puts it into centre seats 2-1 game.
Rivera grounds to Bautista at third throw to Overbay. Two down. Izturis grounds back to Marcum throw to Overbay for third out but games is all tied up again.
Bottom 4th: Gonzalez grounds to Morales at first, one down. Lind grounds to Kendrick at second throw to Morales, two down. Wells fouls out to Morales. Busy guy.
Top 5th: Kendrick lines out to Overbay. Mathis doubles to centre field. Aybar grounds to McDonald at second throw to Overbay, Mathis moves up to to third. Abreu singles to left, here comes Mathis. 3-1 Angels. Abreu steals second. Hunter doubles to right here comes Agbreu 4-1 Angels. Matsui fly ball to Lind in left to end the inning. Marcum does not appear to have much tonight and his pitch count is climbing rapidly.
Bottom 5th: Overbay grounds to Kendrick at second, throw to first Morales. One down but at least he didn’t strike out. Buck strikes out. Ruiz grounds out to Izturis throw to Morales.
Top 6th: Morales strikes out. Rivera grounds to Bautista throw to Overbay. Izturis grounds to Overbay throw to Marcum covering.
Bottom 6th: Snider strikes out. McDonald singles to left. Bautista grounds to shortstop Aybar throw to Kendrick at second to get McDonald. Gonzalez fly ball to Hunter in centre field.
Top 7th: Kendrick singles to centre. Kendrick stealing, Buck great throw to Johnny MC to get him as McDonald falls over. Kendrick out. Mathis strikes out. Aybar grounds to Gonzalez throw to first base Overbay.
Bottom 7th: Lind singles to right. Wells singles to left, Lind to second. Overbay at bat, Lind stealing but throw by catcher Mathis to third base Izturis, gets him. Lind out, Wells to second. Overbay flies out to right field Abreu, Wells moves up to third. Buck grounds to third base Izturis throw to first base Morales.
Top 8th: Accardo now pitching. Abreu strikes out. Hunter singles to centre. Wild pitch by Accardo's, Hunter movers to second. Matsui full count and walks. Hunter stealing and safe at third. Morales lines out to Gonzalez. Rivera singles to centre, here comes Hunter and Matsui moves to second. Pinch runner for Matsui, Willits. Izturis doubles to right, here comes Willits and Rivera. 7-1 Angels.Kendrick grounds to Bautista at third throw to Overbay. Jays are now down by six.
Bottom 8th: Willits in as designated hitter. Ruiz leading off, gets hold of this one a blast to centre seats, 7-2. That’s it for Weaver. Bulger now pitching. Snider 3-0 and walks on four pitches. McDonald fly ball to Hunter in centre. One down. Snider steals second. Bautista pops up to Aybar at short. Gonzalez with two down singles to centre, Snider scores 7-3.Lind gets hold of this one first pitch blast into right field seats. Gonzalez and Lind score. 7-5. That’s it for Bulget. Jepsen now pitching. Wells singles to centre. Overbay strikes out.
Top 9th: Downs now pitching. Mathis grounds to Bautista at first throw to Overbay. One down.
Aybar strange play bounces over third Gonzalez does not throw, infield single. One on for Abreu grounds to Gonzalez over to Overbay, Double play to end the inning.
Bottom 9th: Rodney now pitching. Jays down to their last three outs. Buck fly ball to Hunter in centre. One down. Ruiz grounds back to Rodney throw to Morales at first. Snider grounds to Aybar at short throw to Morales at first and Jays go very quietly after all the excitement in previous inning. Jays fall short and lose this one 7-5 and lose top spot on the division.
The good: Not much, home runs by Wells, Lind and Ruiz but no enough hits in this one. The four run rally in the ninth inning. Vernon three hits tonight, certainly pulling his weight.
The bad: Accardo dug the hole much too deep for the rally.
Marcum not much of a factor tonight, appeared to be struggling.
What does Cito do with Overbay ? Keep pushing him out there until he gets a hit ?
