McGowan goes tonight against Javier Vazquez trying to complete the sweep. Last start by McGowan in Boston went into the 8th but no win.
Jays bats are starting to heat up but still long way from booming. This lineup should be scoring 7-10 runs a night even without Frank Thomas in the middle.
The good signs have been Stairs settling in to cleanup in front of Wells. He may be getting much better pitches now as he is in front of Vernon, but that’s ok. Whatever they are given. Rolen had off day yesterday so is due tonight. Lyle Overbay still struggling even with high on base percentage it is that doubles swing Lyle that we are missing. Hill also has cooled off from early April pace but I think the lower batting order should take pressure off him.
Questions I think remain over Lind and Eckstein. I believe Lind will be ok, he is just adjusting, pressing much too hard each at bat but he definitely has the right stuff. When that swing returns he will be fine. Eckstein I do believe Gibbons has to adjust his playing time. Even if he starts, Gibbons has to find a way to bring in Johnny Mac seventh inning onwards unless they have such a big lead. The last week Eckstein has made two very poor defensive errors, one leading to loss in Boston and the others yesterday leading to unearned runs in the 4th after Jays had taken that 4-0 lead.
Defence has been suspect especially at SS but overall has been strengthened in the infield with Rolen and Scutaro when he has played. Johnny Mac remains THE best fielding SS in the American League, no question.
Pitching who can fault them right now? The starters have been superb for more than a week and indeed the bullpen most of the season. Right Tallet and Frasor are not being used but it only takes one poor outing by starter to utilise them in committee long relief.
If they stay healthy, this is definitely the best starting rotation in the American League.
