Jays lose big on horrible performance by Purcey

Friday May 16th.2008 Toronto v Philadelphia.

Jays now 4th in AL East… This one will be hard for Purcey to win. His only chance is to keep runs down and give bullpen a chance. This Phillies team is too good to get away with second best tonight. Raining.

Result: Phillies win this early by 2nd inning. Final score Phillies win this one 10-3.

Lineups Jays: Scutaro, Hill, Rios, Rolen, Stairs, Mench, Overbay, Zaun and Percy pitching.
Phillies: Rollins, Victorino. Utley, Howard, Burrell, Werth, Feliz, Coste and Moyer pitching

The very good: Jays defence, two good plays each by Rolen and Mench. Great catch by Mench in 3rd but injured. Rios double in 4th to score .
The good: Overbay at bats, Rios at bats. Tallet and Litsch soaking up the innings.
The bad: Mench injury. Watching another ex-Jay hit home runs. Hill’s at bat in 7th with two on.
The ugly: Purcey. No other description. Not ready for majors. Totally outclassed. His control was totally missing. Could not throw strikes. Five walks added to the seven in his only other game.

The game: Top 1st: Scutaro grounds to Feliz at 3B. Hill at bat. Fly ball out to RF. Rios now.. what is he going to do tonight? NO Alex… nice hit to Victorino RF but tries to stretch it into double and thrown out. Great throw right on the bag but poor Alex should have settled for that single. HOWEVER nice hit.
Bottom 1st: Purcey now. Will he be nervous? Rollins first pitch wild swing flies out to Rios. Victorino, grounds out to Rolen, two down. Crowd loves that !!! Utley at bat fly ball to LF turns Mench around but great catch close to wall.

Top 2nd: Rolen at bat lots of booing but he was ready for it as he heard it at Bright House in spring training. Fly ball to LF. Stairs at bat, great hot to CF but Werth catches up with it to make a great catch and take away double. Mench fly ball to Werth again in shallow CF. Three up and down but Jays are hitting Moyer hard.
Bottom 2nd: Howard walks. Burrell walks. Purcey in trouble already. Werth HR three runs. 3-0. Feliz,lines to Rolen. Coste fly ball to LF Mench.Two down. Moyer lines out to Rolen.

Top 3rd: Overbay fly ball to CF Werth. Zaun first pitch swing grounds to SS Rollins two down. Purcey now at bat full count strikes out but takes seven pitches a lot more than some of the other Jays hitters.
Bottom 3rd: Rollins again. First pitch bunts down to first base. You are not going to get speedy Rollins, Purcey. Easy base for Rollins. Victorino at bat, walks another. Same as last inning first two walk. Three walks to date. Utley at bat. Purcey in deep trouble, fooling no one tonight. Rollins fakes steal and stops Victorino caught mid -base by Zaun !! who runs after him. Full count now on Utley singles to RF, Rollins holds and can only get to 3B. Howard at bat. One down. Singles to RF. 4-0. Burrell at bat with Utley at 3B. Still only one out. Purcey is outclassed here I am afraid. Take him out of there soon. Full count again. Walks him, number four. Bases loaded now for Werth. Fast ball on a 3-1 count. Grand slam to RF. Seven rbis now for Werth. 8-0. Feliz grounds to 3B great throw to get him. Two down. Coste at bat. Great catch by Mench at the wall. Banged up on play limping now. May be out of game.

Top 4th: Scutaro strikes out. Hill infield single to 3B. Rios double to CF. great hit for Alex. Hill scores. 8-1. Rolen now singles up the middle. Rios scores 8-2. Stairs strikes out. Stewart now in for Mench. Injured on last play of top of inning. 3-0 count now. Singles to RF. Rolen at 2B.Two on Overbay now at bat. Grounds out at 1B. Leave two on. Rain getting heavier. Both teams have five hits.
Bottom 4th: Litsch now pitching. Question now why didn’t he start? Moyer at bat. Strikes out.Rollins at bat. Lines hard to RF, Stairs makes great shoelace catch. Victorino. Single to RF. Utley fly ball to CF.

Top 5th: Zaun strikes out. Litsch grounds to Feliz but just gets Jesse at 1B. Scutaro with two down grounds to Utley at 2B.
Bottom 5th: Howard strikes out. Burrell at bat, bounces one to Scutaro. Two down. Werth HR to LF 9-2. Feliz strikes out on three pitches. Werth played for Toronto two years. 2002 and 2003. Hmmmm. Another one that got away.

Top 6th: Hill grounds to SS. Rios now had hit well twice. Single and double grounds to SS. Rolen now more boos. 3-0 count. Walks him. More boos !! Stairs strikes out.
Bottom 6th: Coste doubles to RF. Moyer feints bunt and then lifts one to shallow LF Stewart catches and doubles up Coste. Rollins doubles to LF. Victorino doubles down right field line. Rollins scores 10-2. Utley strikes out.

Top 7th: Stewart grounds out to Rollins. Overbay singles to RF. Zaun at bat, passed ball, Overbay to 2B. Walks him, two on. Wilkerson now pinch hitting for Litsch. Fly ball to shallow RF. Scutaro with two on doubles to LF. Overbay scores 10-3. Zaun to 3B. Moyer finished now. Chad Durbin pitching, two on two out. Hill at bat horrible pops up to catcher.
Bottom 7th: Tallet now pitching. Howard strikes out. Burrell fly ball to Stairs in RF. Werth now with three HR’s so far. Full count. Pops up to Overbay. That’s it for history Jason.

Top 8th: Now what we need is a seven run inning Jays bats….. Let’s have some history for Toronto. Durbin still pitching. Rios high fly ball to RF. One down. Boos again must be Rolen at bat. Pops up to Howard at 1B. Stairs 0-3 tonight. Strikes out. 0-4. No heroics this inning. Jays must be leaving it all for the ninth.
Bottom 8th: Crowd already disappearing. Tallet finishing this one off. Feliz first pitch swinging fly ball to Rios in CF. Coste strikes out. Bruntlett now pinch hitting for Durbin. Pops up to Hill at 2B.

Top 9th: I have seen Jays score six in the ninth, how about seven tonight? At least make a fight of this going down. Clay Condrey now pitching. Stewart at bat. Awful at bat by Shannon swinging way off. Overbay at bat another single to RF. One good sign for tonight at least. Zaun chops it to Howard at 1B can only get lead runner Overbay at 2B. Inglett now pinch hitting for Tallet singles into CF. Two on two out for Scutaro. Keep the line moving Marco. Full count. Grounds out to SS. That’s the game.

Gamble pitching Murcey backfired on Gibbons. Win streak ended. Purcey goes back to AAA Syracuse tonight.
