Jays hiters clueless today behind struggling Drabek

Jays v Rays. Series wrap up game.

Getaway day for everyone today. Yankees, Boston, and Orioles all playing.Jays picked up on e on Boston and Yankees last night. More bad news for Jays injured squad. Romero start is pushed back with oblique strain. Drabek pitching today. Bautista and Hill scheduled to return in Detroit series. Hill starts rehab in Dunedin tonight.
David Price pitching today to add to the Jays woes. Not an easy afternoon for them at all.

Lineups: Jays: Davis, Patterson, Escobar, Lind, (DH today), Rivera, Arencibia, Encarnacion playing at 1B today, McCoy at 3B, McDonald at 2B and Drabek pitching.
Rays: Fuld, Zobrist, Damon, Longoria, Joyce, Upton, (back in lineup after that meltdown and ejection last night when he struck out four times) Kotchman, Rodriguez, Jaso and Rays ace Price pitching this afternoon.

Top 1st: Davis, strikes out swinging. Patterson, strikes out swinging, I donlt think Patterson should be hitting this high. He would be great in the bottom third of the order to get on base for Davis. Escobar strikes out looking. Price mowing them down here.
Bottom 1st: Fuld, fly ball to Patterson playing in centre. One down for Zobrist, soft line drive to drop in front of Patterson in centre. One on one down for Damon, fly ball to Patterson, Corey busy guy. Longoria strikes out looking. Nice inning for Drabek.

Top 2nd: Lind fly ball to Fuld in left. Rivera grounds back to Price throw to Kotchman for the second out. Arencibia fouling them off here good at bat, now why would he do that takes third strike??? After a seven pitch at bat. 33 pitch count.
Bottom 2nd: Joyce strikes out swinging, Upton fly ball to centre Patterson makes the catch. Kotchman, strikes out swinging. Three strikeouts for Drabek. 30 pitch count.

Top 3rd: Encarnacion leading off, pops up to Zobrist at second, one down for Mike McCoy playing at 3B today. Singles to Fuld in left, breaks up no-hitter for Price…… Johnny Mc having a horrible time with the bat this series. Pops up to Kotchman in foul ground, two down. McCoy has to hold. Davis for his second at bat. There goes McCoy and safe at second. Nice steal Mike. 3-0 count, taking all the way, and again, full count, McCoy will be running. Strikes out swinging at ball four way high to leave McCoy out there. Rajai might wish he had swung at the two previous pitches in the zone. Pitch count 46.
Bottom 3rd: Rodriguez, 2-2 count, doubles to Rivera in left. Jaso, doubles to right, here comes Rodriguez, 1-0 Rays. Still nobody out. Fuld. Fly ball to left, Jaso to 3B, one down for Zobrist, ball four. Drabek not having a good time out there right now. Two on one down. Damon, singles to McCoy at third here comes run number two. Zobrist to second, Longoria at bat. 3-0 count. I think we will see Villanueva warming up soon if this continues. Ball four, bases loaded and still only one out. Kyle really needs a ground ball here. Joyce at bat. Here is pitching coach Walton. Sac fly to Rivera in left, Zobrist scores, 3-0 Rays two down two on for Upton. 3-1 count, don’t walk him Kyle. That’s better grounds to Escobar, throw to McDonald at second for the third out. An inning for Drabek to forget. Maybe some hits from the Jays hitters would help. Pitch count 61.

Top 4th: Patterson leading off, strikes out swinging, one down for Escobar, strikes out looking. Lind, grounds to Kotchman at first. Seven strikeouts for Price already. Pitch count 60.
Bottom 4th: Kotchman, 3-0, oh boy, ball four. Walks him on four pitches. He is really rattled out there. Walk number three. Rodriguez, fly ball to Patterson in centre, one down. 37 strikes 33 balls. Jaso, grounds to McDonald, throw to Encarnacion at 1B for the out, two down. Kotchman to second on the play. Fuld pops up to McCoy in foul ground at 3B to end this one. Much better for Drabek just….. 72 pitch count.

Top 5th: Rivera leading off, another bat that has gone freezing cold, in fact apart from Lind and Bautista the others are all missing on this road trip. Singles to Fuld in left, going for two, throw gets him at second base. Desparation ball here for Jays. Not good. One down for Arencibia. Grounds to Longoria at 3B throw to first, two down for Encarnacion. Strikes out. Jays offence a sorry lot today even when they do get on base.
Bottom 5th: Might be Drabek’s last inning. Zobrist leading off. 3-1 count, please don’t walk him Kyle. Full count, fly ball to Davis in right, one down for Damon, 0-2 count, doubles to Rivera in left. One on one down for Longoria. Grounds to McCoy throw to Encarnacion, two down and Damon stays at second. Joyce, 3-1 count, grounds to McDonald throw Encarnacion for third out, the blood letting has stopped.

Top 6th: McCoy strikes out swinging. One down. McDonald singles to Upton in centre. Davis fly ball to Joyce in right. Two down for Patterson. Grounds out to Rodriguez at short, throw to Kotchman and Johnny Mac is left out there.
Bottom 6th: Upton grounds to McCoy at 3B, throw to Encarnacion, one down. Kotchman singles to Patterson in centre. Rodriguez pops up to Johnny Mac at second, two down. Jaso with one on, ball four. That’s it for Kyle today. Here comes the boss. Casey Janssen now pitching. Fuld with two on, fly ball to Davis in right for the final out.

Top 7th: Price still pitching. Jays hitters have yet to solve him today, Escobar leading off, fly ball to Joyce in right, one down for Lind. There we go Adam, grounds to Zobrist at second but beats thee throw. One on one down for Rivera. Grounds to Longoria, throw to Zobrist at second, on to first Kotchman, double play ball and that about sums up today for hapless Jays.
Bottom 7th: Zobrist facing Janssen, grounds to McDonald at second, throw to Encarnacion, one down. Damon lines out to McCoy at 3B.

Top 8th: Arencibia, fly ball to Upton in centre, one down for Encarnacion, strikes out looking, McCoy fly ball to Joyce in right. Lacklustre effort by Jays hitters today.
Bottom 8th: Joyce singles to Joyce in right. That’s it for Casey. Dotel now pitching.

Top 9th: Price going all the way today and should have no problem doing so, this Jays lineup capitulated long ago in this game. McDonald grounds to Rodriguez at short, oh…. he throws it away and Johnny Mac to second on the throw. One on and in scoring position for a change today for Davis. Fly ball to Joyce in right. McDonald to third. One down for Patterson takes the first two pitches for strikes, hmm! Not sure what his strategy is here. 2-2 count, grounds to Zobrist at second throw to Kotchman for out number two, McDonald comes in for consolation run today for the Jays. Rays are happy with the out. 3-1 game. Oh… That’s it for Price. Kyle Farnsworth in for the last out. Escobar with nobody on base, 2-2 count. Full count. Fouling them off here, singles to Joyce in right. One on for Lind. Tying run !!! Escobar takes second, defensive indifference. Lind is the guy they want here. Grounds to Kotchman at first to end this one. Very disappointing end to the road trip. Jays hitters are missing Bautista bigtime.

The good: Nothing much today. Drabek struggled, and one bad inning with the three runs but managed to get into the sixth which was in itself an achievement, but that was it despite getting the tying run to the plate. I think it was the lack of intensity today that was noticeable.
The bad: This was a very weak hitting lineup today apart from Davis and Lind. I think they could well be the only two of today’s lineup still hitting in September. Must remember to check at the end of the season. Jays limp home in bottom spot to face a strong Tigers side for four.

As Alex keeps repeating and remninding us, this a rebuilding year and today was good but painful example.
