Tallet walks this one away but Vernon has a good game

Jays v Yankees. Game one of four.

Jays hoping for something today. Have to get back in this thing. Vernon back and down the lineup. Dellucci playing his first game for Jays. Adams had his chance.

The good: Wells, let’s give Vernon credit wher it is due today. Back in lineup but hitting six behind Overbay, Vernon has multi-hit game with double and a home run. Rolen’s single moves his hitting streak to 20. Infield defense again by Hill and Scutaro.
The bad: Tallet’s walks, walks and yet more walks especially in that fifth inning walking bases loaded and then walking in a run. Four walks to day to go the six last time out. Jays 1/8 with runners in scoring position. I hope this changes in the second half of season, we are all tired of seeing the leadoff guy still out on second at the end of the inning.

Lineups: Toronto: Scutaro, Hill, Lind, Rolen, Overbay, Wells, Rios, Dellucci, Chavez and Tallet pitching. Wells, dropped to No. 6 in the starting batting order for the first time since June 3, 2005. "If I want to get back to the position I'm used to hitting, I've got to do a better job," Wells said. No word from Rios.
Yankees: Jeter, Damon, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Cano, Swisher, Matsui, Cervelli, Gardner and Burnett pitching.

Top 1st: Scutaro strikes out. Hill full count and walks. Lind strikes out. Rolen fly ball to right field Swisher. Jays go quietly to Burnett.
Bottom 1st: Jeter lines out to right field Rios. Damon grounds to Hill throw to Overbay. Two down for Teixeira singles to left. Rodriguez fly ball to Wells.

Top 2nd: Overbay strikes out. Wells 2-for-19 slide, doubles to right. That felt good Vernon. Rios grounds back to Burnett throw to first base Teixeira. Dellucci hit by a pitch. Nice first at bat !!! Chavez pops up to Jeter. Vernon left out there.
Bottom 2nd: Cano first pitch swinging, home run to centre, Yankees go out 1-0. Tallet would like that pitch back. Swisher grounds to Rolen throw to Overbay. Matsui singles to centre. Cervelli grounds to Rolen throw to Overbay, Matsui to second. Gardner fly ball to Rios.

Top 3rd: Scutaro doubles to left , that was definitely playable by Damon, he backpedaled slowly and allowed that drive to left to fall behind him for the double. Hill grounds to Jeter at second, throw to first base Teixeira. Lind fly ball to left field Damon. Rolen fly ball to right field Swisher. Scutaro leadoff double left out there. How many times have we seen that this season with no outs and could not bring him in? Jays should be taking advantage of every little chance they get here.
Bottom 3rd: Jeter singles to centre. Damon strikes out.Teixeira strikes out. Rodriguez 3-0 and walks on four pitches, Jeter to second. Tallet very careful pitching around A-Rod. Cano grounds to Hill throw to Overbay.

Top 4th: Overbay doubles to left. Here we go again, Jays have no problem getting leadoff into scoring position but can they finish the job off? Wells at bat, wild pitch, Overbay to third. Wells strikes out. Rios, first pitch swinging, singles up the middle. Overbay scores and Jays have tied this one up 1-1. Dellucci, there goes Rios, Cervelli throw right there and Alex is out. Chavez grounds to third, Rodriguez has lots of time and throw to first base Teixeira. A faster guy might have made it.
Bottom 4th: Swisher fly ball to Wells. Matsui grounds to Hill throw to Overbay. Cervelli fly ball to left field Dellucci.

Top 5th: Scutaro fly ball to Swisher in right. Hill strikes out. Lind fly ball to Swisher in right.
Bottom 5th : Gardner full count and walks. Leadoff walk, this is Tallet’s major problem. Jeter with one on, walks, Gardner to second. Come on Tallet. Damon a great bunt up the first base line, tallet has no chance and has loaded the bases with no outs, He is in deep trouble here. Teixeira, 3-0 Tallet is falling apart just cannot find the strike zone, and walks him and a run in. Three walks and still no outs. Come on Cito. Rodriguez with bases loaded, Tallet playing with fire here. A-Rod grounds to Rolen coming home with the throw and get Jeter, one down but bases still loaded. Passed ball !!!!! goes to the wall, maybe Barajas would have had that but it looks as if someone was not in communication, Chavez was set up outside and that ball was in, Another run anyway as Damon score and Yankees are 3-1Cano with still only one down. Cano grounds to Hill, again coming home with the throw and gets Teixeira out, A-Rod to third.Texeira arguing that his hand was in there, now Girardi is out there. Call stands. Swisher strikes out. Tallet escape with only two runs, that could have been much, much worse, but Tallet will never be a great pitcher until he can control those walks. Just like last week’s game.

Top 6th: Rolen fly ball to right field Swisher. Overbay strikes out. Well with two down, oh yes Vernon very nice swing full extension and this one is into leftfield seats, home run for Vernon. 3-2 Yankees. Vernon happy with his day today. Rios now can he do something ? Fly ball to Swisher in right, but Jays have one back.
Bottom 6th: Matsui grounds to Hill throw to Overbay. One down, Cervelli singles to centre.Gardner, there goes Cervelli great throw by Chavez to get him at second. Gardner pops up to Overbay.

Top 7th Dellucci strikes out. Chavez fly ball to right field Swisher. Scutaro grounds to third and safe at first. Hill pops up A-Rod at third.
Bottom 7th: Accardo pitching. Jeter singles to centre. Damon, oh nice play, pops it up to Scutaro making nice behind shoulder catch and throw to first to double up Jeter. Jeter misjudged that one and thought it would fall in. Jays make him pay with double play. Teixeira grounds to Scutaro throw to Overbay.

Top 8th: Coke pitching. Lind fly ball to left field Damon. Hughes now pitching. Rolen singles to right. Career high hit streak number 20 for Scott. Overbay grounds back to Hughes throw to second to get Rolen. Wells grounds to second base Cano throw to first base Teixeira.
Bottom 8th: A-Rod, gets hold of this one from Accardo , home run into right field seats. 4-2 Yankees and that will probably hold up. That’s it for Accardo, just left him in too long here Cito.Carlson now pitching.Cano grounds to Scutaro throw to Overbay. One down. Swisher grounds back to Carlson throw to Overbay. Matsui walks. Cervelli grounds to Scutaro throw to Hill for third out.

Top 9th: Rivera pitching. Cabrera in at right. Rios leading off, down and away, strikes out. Pitch is three feet off the plate. Alex never ever learns does he? Dellucci fly ball to centre field Gardner. Two down last chance here for Jays. Number nine hitter, no pinch hitter Cito ? Chavez strikes out. Yankees win this one, looked like it might be fight but the Rodriguez home run changed the dynamics of this one. You could feel the energy disappear. Rivera his 21st save in 22 chances, No. 503 of his career.

Tomorrow Halladay, once again the Jays put all the pressure on him. Also tomorrow, Saturday's observance of the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous farewell speech.
