Tampa v Toronto. Game three Series finale and Jays trying to avoid sweep.
One the Jays really need to win today.
Lineups: Tampa: Upton, Crawford, Longoria, Pena, Zobrist, Burrell, Bartlett, Kapler, Hernandez, and pitching Shields.
Toronto: Scutaro, Hill, Lind, Rolen, Overbay , Millar, Rios, Barajas, Bautista, and Romero pitching. Wells not playing today? I guess Cito will say taking a day off nothing to it. But if Vernon can light it up in New York no problem. Good to see Millar instead of Adams. Not a bad lineup although he may be putting too much pressure on Lind at number three. He was so good lower down at the beginning of the season. Good Canada Day crowd today.
The very good: Ricky Romero shut out of Tampa to avoid the sweep. Seven strikeouts and managed to get out of some nasty situations. Lind and Rolen, the one-two punch in the lineup today. Back to back home runs which really sealed this win. Barajas with his home run to give some breathing room at 3-0.
The good: Defence. Two double plays at a perfect time to help Romero.
The bad: Rios as ever, just hopeless and at sea hitting. Will the Jays ever bite the bullet and send him to Vegas to learn how to hit? And Jays with runners in scoring position as ever 0/5.
Top 1st: Upton 3-0 and walks on four pitches. Come on Ricky, not a home run but you don’t want these guys on base in first inning. Crawford, with Upton on base, not a good mix. Oh my, great throw over and Romero has him picked off at first. One down. Crawford strikes out. Longoria strikes out. Nice pitching by Romero, that could have been a very different start.
Bottom 1st: Scutaro fly ball to right field Kapler. One down. Hill strikes out. Lind strikes out. Shields matching Romero here.
Top 2nd: Pena bunting, Romero to Overbay for first out. Madden trying everything to get going first today. Zobrist doubles to right. Burrell grounds to Scutaro throw to Overbay. Two down for Bartlett fly ball to Rios.
Bottom 2nd: Rolen pops up to Kapler in right field. Overbay strikes out. Millar fly ball to Upton in centre.
Top 3rd: Kapler strikes out. Hernandez fly ball to Bautista. Upton strikes out.
Bottom 3rd: Rios grounds to third base Longoria throw to Pena at first. Barajas strikes out. Two down. Bautista singles to centre. Scutaro with two down, doubles to left, Bautista scores and Jays go ahead 1-0. That feels good for Jays first time this series ???? Scutaro goes to third on the throw. Hill grounds to Longoria throw to first base Pena. But Jays are ahead.
Top 4th: Crawford strikes out. Longoria strikes out. Pena grounds to Hill throw to Overbay.
Bottom 4th: Lind doubles to right. Rolen strikes out. Overbay grounds to first, Pena error, Overbay to second and safe. Lind scores. 2-0 Jays. Millar fly ball to left field Crawford. Rios 3-0 and walks on four pitches. Barajas grounds to third base Longoria throw to second Zobrist to get Rios.
Top 5th: Zobrist singles to centre. Come on Ricky need to shut them down here. Burrell strikes out. One down. Bartlett fly ball to Lind. Two down.
Top 6th: Kapler grounds to Rolen throw to Overbay. One down. Hernandez fly ball to Rios. Upton fly ball to Rios. Good three up and down for Romero.
Bottom 6th: Jays really need to get a couple more here. Lind to leadoff, lines out to Kapler in right. Rolen, there you are Scott, singles to centre to keep that hitting streak going now 19 games. Overbay grounds to first base Pena throw to Bartlett, Rolen out at second. Overbay at first. Millar with two down. Come on Kevin. Strikes out.
Top 7th: Crawford singles to left. Longoria fly ball to Rios. Pena singles to centre, Crawford to third. Romero in trouble here. Zobrist 3-0 and walks on four pitches, Pena to second. Bases are loaded. Ricky in big trouble now.Burell, WHOA Canada Day gift here. Burrell grounds to Scutaro on to Hill on to Overbay, double play ball to end that threat. That could have been the game there. Now Jays have another chance to get some.
Bottom 7th: Rios leading off, lines out to Kapler and remains hitless. Not good Alex. What is it going to take to get you going? Barajas, with one down. YES indeed Rod, make them pay, no doubt about this one, home run to left and Jays are ahead 3-0. Bautista strikes out. Scutaro with two down, Shields at 96 pitches. Scutaro strikes out.
Top 8th: Bartlett, full count and walks. Kapler grounds to Scutaro no Marco, error on Scutaro and both runners safe. Aybar pinch-hitting for Hernandez. Nobody out and two on. Aybar lines to Scutaro, this time no question. On to Hill doubles off Bartlett at second. Kapler at first for Upton. Full count and walks. Romero really tiring here. 112 pitches. Come on Cito. Crawford with two on and two down. Lines out to Bautista in right. Romero escapes major trouble that inning not once but twice. Scutaro redeemed himself.
Bottom 8th: Jays need a couple more here to give some breathing space. Shields also on 103 pitches. He and Romero like two heavyweights today. Hill hitless today, perfect chance to get going. Fly ball to Upton in centre. Lind with one down. YES Adam, perfect timing, gets hold of this one, home run to centre 4-0 Jays. Am so pleased for Lind. You see him trying so hard game after game, he deserves every plaudit he gets. Obviously enjoying number three today !!! tweo extra base hits. Rolen now with Shields tiring. YES, YES Scott, he gets hold of one, Home run into left and Jays are a rocking here, 5-0 Jays. Overbay hitless join the party Lyle. That’s it for Shields. Choate now pitching. Lyle singles to centre and breaks his hitless game, Millar now also hitless, Come on Kevin. Hit one out. That’s it for Choate, Balfour now pitching. Not this time, fly ball to Crawford in left. Rios also hitless your big chance here Alex. Strikes out. Oh boy…. I think you are going to be down the order for a long time to come Alex. The new numbers two and three Lind and Rolen are doing very well.
Top 9th: All change. Frasor now pitching. Romero did an incredible shutout for eight. Wells in at centre. Rios moves to right field. Bautista to left field. Longoria strikes out. One down. Pena strikes out. Two down for Zobrist, crowd on their feet, and walks, Come on Jason, Cito will be furious. Burrell at bat, Zobrist takes second, defensive indifference, would be nice one day for a team with two outs to get a player doing that. Burrell strikes out and Jays win big. Avoid the sweep and go to New York with some confidence at least.
