Lawrie, Alvarez and the bullpen beat the Red Sox

Red Sox v Jays Game one of four.

First the good news, Dustin McGowan after three long years and three major surgeries, is finally off the DL and is back in Toronto, great news and he will be pitching out of the bullpen. That will be a great sight to see him on the mound again. John Farrell back for this series. The not so good, Jays on a losing streak here and fresh off the sweep in New York and no one has forgotten the series in June at Rogers Centre when Boston outscored 35-6 and swept the three game series. Time for payback bit right now Boston is fighting for a playoff spot and in no mood for generosity.
The Air show should also provide some excitement and noise off the field as they fly right by the stadium on the waterfront. A good holiday crowd at the game this afternoon.

Line-ups: Red Sox: Ellsbury, Pedroia, Gonzalez, Ortiz, Youkilis, Crawford, Reddick, Varitek, Scutaro and Beckett pitching.
Jays: McCoy, Thames, Bautista, Lind, Encarnacion, Johnson, Lawrie, Molina, Wise, and Alvarez pitching.

Top 1st: Ellsbury, pops it up to Wise in centre, one down. Pedroia, pops it up to Wise in centre, two down for Gonzalez, lines it high to left but Thames makes the catch at the wall. Three up and down for Alvarez.
Bottom 1st: McCoy, lines it past Youkilis at third, just foul, perfect, singles to Reddick in right centre. Thames, there goes McCoy and Thames grounds to first, throw to second not in time. McCoy safe at second. Thames out at first. Bautista one down and one on. Takes strike three, Jose not happy guy, discussing with umpire, two down for Lind, 3-0 count, ball four and walks, two on two down for Encarnacion, there goes McCoy steals third without a throw. Strikes out swinging. Edwin leaves two on.

Top 2nd: Ortiz, shift right on for Ortiz, high pop up to Wise in shallow centre, Youkilis, grounds to Lawrie, throw to Lind at first two down. Crawford, grounds to Kelly Johnson at second, throws on the run and in the air a strike to Lind, wow great play Kelly.
Bottom 2nd: Johnson, singles back up the middle, Lawrie, grounds to Youkilis at third to Pedroia and on to Gonzalez not in time , Lawrie safe at first, speed, Molina, there goes Lawrie, and safe on the throw, his fifth steal. Jays running wild today !!! good to see some aggression. Bounces up the middle to Pedroia, throw to Gonzalez to get Molina, Lawrie to third. Wise, strikes out swinging and Jays once again leave the hitter at third. They can’t keep doing this especially against Boston.

Top 3rd: Reddick, grounds to Johnson off the glove of Alvarez to Johnson, throw to Lind one down. Varitek, full count, strikes out swinging, nice pitch. Two down for ex-Jay Marco Scutaro, grounds to third off glove of Lawrie and past McCoy into left, First hit for Red Sox, Ellsbury, doubles it into right field corner, Scutaro to third and holds on the throw of Bautista, two in scoring position. Pedroia bounces to Lawrie, throw to Lind for the out at first. Alvarez escapes trouble.
Bottom 3rd: McCoy, grounds first pitch to Youkilis, throw to Gonzalez, one down. Thames, strikes out swinging, two down for Bautista strikes out swinging.

Top 4th: Gonzalez, 1-2 count, strikes him out swinging, very nice. Ortiz, singles to Bautista in right. One on one down for Youkilis. Full count, pops it up to Bautista in shallow right for second out. Crawford, another full count, ball four, two on two down for Reddick, 0-2 count, strikes out looking. Red Sox leave two more out there. Alvarez making a lot of pitches but is hanging in there when it counts. The guy needs some run support here though.
Bottom 4th: Lind, 2-2 count, strikes three looking. Encarnacion, grounds to Scutaro at short, long throw and bounces throw to Gonzalez at first, not in time to get Edwin. One down one on for Kelly Johnson. Drives it high to left for Crawford to make the catch. Two down for Lawrie. 1-2 count, there goes Encarnacion, and safe without a throw. Problem with Beckett and his right foot and he is out of the game. Wow. They probably think they can still beat the Jays but they do not want to lose Beckett at this stage of the season. Alfredo Aceves. On a 2-2 count, there goes Encarnacion steals third. Ball four and Lawrie walks. Molina fly ball to Reddick in right for third out, Jays leave two more out there. This is not good, they have to take these chances against Boston.

Top 5th: Varitek, grounds to Lawrie in front of McCoy. Throw to Lind, one down for Scutaro, another full count, lines it to the wall in left centre, stand up double for Scutaro. Ellsbury, lines it right back at Alvarez, they have Scutaro hung up and throw to Lawrie tags him out and throw to McCoy at second, gets Ellsbury, double play ball, what a great play by Lawrie.
Bottom 5th: Wise, 2-2 count, strikes out swinging, one down for McCoy. 0-2 count, strikes out swinging. Two down for Thames. Strikes out swinging. Alceves not missing a beat here for Beckett.

Top 6th: Pedroia, grounds to Lawrie, bobbles it but throw to Lind gets Pedroia, Gonzalez, 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, two down for Ortiz, goes the opposite field lines it right at Thames for third out. Alvarez continues to keep Boston off the scoreboard.
Bottom 6th: Bautista, 0-2 today. Villanueva warming up in Jays bullpen. Lines this one to left for Crawford to make the out. Lind, singles to right. Encarnacion, grounds to Pedroia, steps on the bag at second throw to Gonzalez double play to end the inning.

Top 7th: Villanueva now pitching. Alvarez did a great job far more than we could expect the guy to do against a powerful Red Sox line-up. To hold them scoreless through six is excellent. Youkilis, 3-1 count, ball four, leadoff guy is on. Crawford, lines this one to left, but Thames makes a nice catch, one down for Reddick, singles to Bautista in right. Youkilis at second. Villanueva in trouble here. Varitek, grounds to Lind, has trouble finding it and only one play to throw to Villanueva to get Varitek. Two down but two runners in scoring position. Scutaro, perfect grounds to McCoy, throw to Lind to get out of this one. Red Sox leave two more in scoring position. Someone has to score in this game.
Bottom 7th: Johnson, pops it up to Scutaro in shallow left centre. Casey Janssen warming up in bullpen. One down for Lawrie, 3-1 count, ball four, another walk to Lawrie. Molina, grounds to Scutaro, throw to Pedroia, to Gonzalez, yet another double play ball to end the inning.

Top 8th: Janssen now pitching. Ellsbury, full count, strikes out swinging, one down for Pedroia, fly ball to Bautista in right, two down. Gonzalez, this is trouble lines it to right centre Bautista unable to get it and Gonzalez has stand up double. Ortiz, intentional walk. Youkilis, two down two on. 1-2 count, takes strike three. Youkilis does not agree but umpire says yes.
Bottom 8th: Wise leading off, now a great afternoon for Dewayne today. But then he is not alone. 2-2 count, strikes out swinging. One down for McCoy, 3-1 count, ball four, one on for Thames. There goes McCoy and safe on the throw number two for him today. 2-2 count, hits him on the foot, and ball bounces away as McCoy goes to third. Great chance here now. Bautista facing a new pitcher Daniel Bard. High pop up into shallow right for Reddick, runners hold. Lind with two down. 1-2 count, strikes out swinging, Jays leave two more out there.

Top 9th: Francisco now out there. Crawford, lines this one to left centre, great running diving catch by Wise, that was another highlight reel play by Jays. One down for Reddick, lines this one to right and once again out of reach of Bautista, double for Reddick. Varitek, One on one down. Come on Frankie don’t let it get away now. 2-2 count, strikes out, two down for Scutaro. Lines this one to left for Thames.
Bottom 9th: Bard still pitching. Encarnacion, strikes out, one down for Johnson, fly ball to Ellsbury, two down. Lawrie, grounds back to Bard throw to Gonzalez at first and this one is extra innings. Wow who would have forecast this score after nine innings?

Top 10th: Francisco going for second inning. Ellsbury grounds to Lind throw to Francisco for the out. Pedroia, strikes out swinging on three pitches, two down, Gonzalez, 3-1, ball four. One on two down for Ortiz. Pinch runner Aviles. Ortiz, shift right again, pulls it to right, to Lawrie !! playing behind first in shallow right, throw to Lind for third out.
Bottom 10th: Jays get three more chances. Aviles stays in the game in at third base. Youkilis moves to first base. Papelbon now pitching. All or nothing for Francona. Molina, that will do Jose, pulls it to left, bounces past Aviles and Scutaro. Chris Woodward now pinch-running for Molina. Wise bunting, oh no, 0-2 count, strikes out.Teahen, oh Papelbon throws over to first and ball gets away, Woodward to second. Error to Papelbon. That would have been huge if Wise had the bunt down. Teahen now pinch-hitting for McCoy, full count and ball four. Nice at bat for Teahen. Two on for Thames, strikes out. Two down for Bautista, Papelbon being ultra careful here, full count, ball four and bases are loaded for Lind. Woodward to third, Teahen to second. Just a single will do Adam, Lind 0-2 strikes out on three pitches. Ouch, leaving bases loaded ???? Not good Adam.

Top 11th: Camp now pitching. Arencibia now catching for Molina. Woodward at short. Youkilis full count, grounds to third, Lawrie to Lind. One down for Crawford. Strikes out.Two down for Reddick, full count, pops up to Johnson
Bottom 11th: Hard to believe a scoreless game with these two teams. Dan Wheeler now pitching. Encarnacion, gets hold of this one, to the wall but long fly ball to Reddick in right, close but not enough Edwin. One down, Johnson pops it up to Scutaro at short, Lawrie, there we go, listen to that crowd, NO DOUBT about this one, a rocket to left centre into the seats, here comes Lawrie, and makes a crazy leap into the crowd of his teammates at home plate, Brett that is how you get injured. BUT walk off home run for Lawrie and the Jays win this 1-0. What a game.

Tough for anyone to lose but shed no tears for the Red Sox. Has Lawrie really only been here for a month?

Excellent: Lawrie of course with the walk off home run and don’t forget his glove on that double play. But also today Henderson Alvarez another excellent outing. The bullpen for once came through to support Alvarez and Camp gets the win. Great defence in the outfield and outstanding catch by Wise. AND good to see the aggressive running game back for the Jays with four stolen bases.
Not so good: Jays 0-9 today with runners in scoring position. Boston not much better at 0-8.
