Romero complete game gem helped by Jays power bats, Snider, Hill, Wells and Bautista

Game two of three. Jays v Yankees. Tuesday August 3.

Sorry about that six doubles not five last night. So excited I lost count.

You know that it will be Tallet who will give up that home run # 600 to Rodriguez. It is in the stars Cito. Speaking of Cito, he was responding to question on interviews for new Manager. He felt that they were not needed. After all with his AL Championships and two World Series why would he go to San Francisco Giants for an interview? Hmm. Some disconnect here with reality Cito. This is the way the world operates. You interview then are hired and then crazy as it may seem you have to perform and are evaluated. Sometimes when the performance is not satisfactory the Manager gets fired. But then old school is old school, you offer me the job, I don’t have to apply. And then he wonders why the players revolted last September. Old school is what I am…. I just hope that Romero can go the distance tonight and not let Tallet into the game.

Lineups: Jays: Lewis, Escobar, Bautista, Wells, Lind (playing at 1st, for Overbay, Lind’s first major league game at first. I don’t agree with that, you need the best team out there Cito to beat these Yankees.) Hill, Buck, Snider, Encarnacion
Yankees: Jeter, Swisher, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Cano, Thames, Kearns, Cervelli, Gardner.
Pitching: Moseley v Romero

Top 1st: Lewis leading off, grounds first pitch to Jeter at short, if there is a knock on Fred it is that he doesn’t get leadoff and the need to see some pitches not just for himself but also his teammates so that they get a read on the pitcher. Escobar, exactly the same play on two pitches, three pitches two outs. Bautista, grounds to Rodriguez at third, throw to first, six pitches three outs. Not good, in fact it is awful.
Bottom 1st: Jeter leading off. 2-0, 3-1 count, ball four, one on. Swisher, 1-2, 2-2, lines it right at Escobar, nice catch and quick throw to Lind at first, but Jeter back in time. Teixeira, one down one on. 1-2 count. No doubt about this hit, this one is out of here, high drive into left field seats, 2-0 Yankees. Rodriguez, 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, strikes out swinging, two down. Cano, 2-1, grounds to Hill, throw to Lind for the out. 23 pitches compared to the six by Moseley.

Top 2nd: Wells leading off. First pitch grounds to Rodriguez at third, throw to first, one down. Four outs in seven pitches. Lind, lines it into left bounces into the crowd, ground rule double. Hill, Grounds to Rodriguez at third, throw to first to get Hill. Lind doesn’t move. Two down. Buck two down and runner in scoring position. 1-2 count, that’s better singles into right, Swisher throw not in time to get Lind, 2-1 Yankees. Snider first pitch grounds to Teixeira steps on the bag for the out. Am surprised at that by Travis. 19 pitches two innings. This is like last night’s game.
Bottom 2nd: Meantime on the other side. Thames leading off. Grounds to Encarnacion throw to Lind for the out. Kearns, 2-2, full count. Grounds to Hill, throw to Lind, two down. Cervelli grounds first pitch to Escobar, throw to Lind for third out. Pitch count 36.

Top 3rd: Encarnacion, pops up first pitch to Gardner, one down. Lewis, grounds to Cano, throw to first two down. Escobar, singles into left corner. Bautista, 2-2, Escobar running, fouled off. Jams him inside and pops up to Teixeira. 31 pitches.
Bottom 3rd: Gardner leading off. Bunting and fouls it off. Checked swing to Escobar, great throw to get him at first. Jeter, grounds to Hill, throw to Lind, two down. Swisher, lines it to Wells in centre. Good inning but Ricky’s pitch count is already too high to go the distance. Pitch count 45.

Top 4th: Can Jays get to Moseley now? Wells leading off. Singles to centre, Lind with one on. 0-2 count, grounds weakly to Rodriguez at third, flip to Cano throw to first to get Lind, double play ball. Hill, hit in the back. Buck, this is trouble, doubles in to left corner, Hill beats the throw 2-2 Jays, Snider, there she goes lines this one into right centre, into the bullpen. 4-2 Jays. You could see this developing last night hitting those doubles so strong. Moseley cannot believe it. Travis is deceptively strong, that hit kept on going. Encarnacion. 1-2 strikes out swinging, bat flies into the crowd. But the big news is Jays come storming back with three to give Romero a lead. And that is with a double play. Moseley still shell shocked. Pitch count 47.
Bottom 4th: Teixeira leading off. Strikes out swinging. Here comes Rodriguez. WHOA Aaron, great diving catch at second to rob A-Rod of a hit, highlights reel catch. Cano, two down, lines first pitch right at Hill another great leaping catch, seven pitches. The Hill and Snider show here. Pitch count 52.

Top 5th: Lewis leading off, 0-2 count. Lines it back right at Moseley reflex catch as he puts his glove out. Robs Fred of a hit there. Escobar one down. Grounds first pitch to Rodriguez, throw to first, two down. Escobar appears to be in a mini slump right now and not playing as well as he was earlier. Bautista, two down, 2-2 count. Ball three, Ball four. Wells with one on and two down. Oh my, Cervelli throws it down to first and sails into right field Bautista all the way to third. Vernon drives it to Gardner running in from centre. Pitch count 60.
Bottom 5th: Thames leading off. Grounds to Encarnacion, throw not in time to Lind. Edwin playing too deep there. Kearns with one on. 2-1, high fly ball to Wells in centre, one down. Cervelli, 2-1 count. 2-2, strikes out swinging. Two down for Gardner. Lines it to short another leaping catch, this time by Escobar to end the inning. Romero getting great defence behind him tonight from his infield. 69 pitch count.

Top 6th: Lind leading off. Grounds back to Moseley, throw to first for the out. One down for Hill, singles into fight. Checked swing. And mix up between Cano and Teixeira there on coverage. Buck, lines it to Kearns in left, two down. Snider, singles into left centre, Hill stops at second. Two on. Encarnacion, grounds first pitch to Rodriguez. Throw to first for the third out. Not a good at bat by Edwin there. Moseley was struggling, out some pressure on him. Maybe time to move Bautista to third permanently. Pitch count 70.
Bottom 6th: Jeter leading off. 0-2 count. Grounds it down the first base line to Lind to make the out himself. One down for Swisher. Lines this hard to left centre, Vernon makes good running catch here. Two down for Teixeira, grounds back to Romero, throw to Lind for the out. Pitch count 77.

Top 7th: Lewis, (first pitch) pops up to Rodriguez at third. Escobar, dribbler off the end of his bat, back to Moseley throw to first for second out. Bautista, 1-2 count. strikes out swinging. Not a good inning for the top three hitters. 77 pitches.
Bottom 7th: Rodriguez leading off. First pitch fly ball to Wells in centre, one down. Cano, grounds to Hill, throw to Lind, two down. Thames, two down, 0-2 count. 2-2, full count, whoa, great pitch, strikes out swinging. Nine pitches 87 pitch count.

Top 8th: Jays hitters need to give Ricky some breathing room here. A couple more runs (please).Wells leading off. 2-1 count. Logan and Wood working in Yankees bullpen. YES Vernon, turns on this one, high slam to left, this is out of here way back in left field seats, 5-2 Jays. Lind now, 0-2 count. Grounds back to Moseley throw to first, one down. That’s it for Moseley. Kerry Wood now pitching. Hill, 1-1 count. Turn on this and hammers this one into left, almost same area. WOW 6-2 Jays. Buck one down. 0-2 count. Strikes out swinging, two down for Snider. This should be interesting. 1-2 count. 2-2, strike three looking. Jays hitters heard my prayer.
Bottom 8th: Kearns leading off. 1-2 count. full count. Grounds to Escobar, throw to Lind for the out, one down for pinch hitter Posada. 0-1 count. 1-2, grounds to Hill, throw to Lind two down. Gardner with two down bunting, foul, 1-2 count, grounds back to Romero, throw to Lind to end this one. 105 pitches. I don’t think Ricky will be out to finish it off.

Top 9th: Can Jays add another here? Bottom of the 9th are the big guns for NY. This game is not over. Encarnacion leading off. Sergio Mitre pitching. Not many leaving they want to see A-Rod if possible at bottom of inning. 1-2 count. This is trouble, doubles to the wall in left. Over the head of Kearns, Lewis now with runner in scoring position. Grounds to second, throw to first and Encarnacion moves to third, one down runner at third for Escobar. Grounds to Rodriguez throw to first, Edwin has to hold at third, two down for Bautista, hitless tonight not this time, hammers this one to left, here comes Edwin here comes Jose. Yet another for Jose. #33. 8-2 Jays. Wells, with two down, grounds to Jeter at second, throw to first to end this one. Jays have a six run lead.
Bottom 9th: Everyone staying for A-Rod. Romero out there to try to finish this one. Jeter leading off. Grounds to Hill, throw to Lind for the out. Swisher, 0-2 count. 2-2. Full count, crowd wants a runner at first to get to A-Rod. Fly ball to Wells two down. Teixeira, 1-1 count. 2-1, come on Ricky. YES, YES, grounds to Escobar, nice play by Yunel throw to Overbay now at first for third out. WOW what a great performance by Romero. Complete game 118 pitches and after a 23 pitch first inning, would never have thought he would last this long.

Excellent. Ricky Romero.
Defence: Hill, Escobar, both with two highlight reel plays and the final out by Escobar was huge preventing Rodriguez from coming to the plate
Interesting point re Lind if he is struggling offensively should he be trying to cope with new demands at first? My vote is no.
Jays get 12 hits tonight, only Lewis hitless. Jays have picked up two on NY, have won the series can they sweep them tomorrow? That is tough.
Hill average climbing now .213. Snider another two hit game. Seven hits from the bottom half of the order.

The bad: The first inning of this game and the approach by Jays hitters.
