Jays home run power not enough to overcome Morrow's loss

Jays v Orioles. Game one of three.

Jays send Morrow out there tonight, has been pitching well so far. No Santos tonight, home visiting his new baby back tomorrow. Boston had a great home opener today hammering the Rays.

Lineups: Orioles: Reimold, Hardy, Markakis, Jones, Wieters, Betemit, Reynolds, Davis, Andino and Hunter pitching.
Jays: Escobar, Johnson, Bautista, Lind, Encarnacion, Thames, Lawrie, Arencibia, Rasmus and Morrow pitching.

Top 1st: Reimold leading off, lines it high to right centre, off the wall for Rasmus, leadoff double. Hardy, grounds to Escobar, throw to Lind, Reimold to third and one down for Markakis, this will do it lines to Thames in left, here comes Reimold and just like that Orioles go out ahead 1-0. Two down for Jones. Lines it past a diving Escobar, Rasmus throw to Escobar relays to Lind and they get Jones going too far past first and not able to get back in time although that looked awfully close. Manager Showalter thinks so as well arguing the call but no good.
Bottom 1st: Escobar, lines to centre for Jones to run it down, one down. Johnson, fly ball to left, this one is carrying over the head of Reimold in left field home run Kelly, and score is tied up 1-1. Sweet swing Kelly. Bautista, 3-0, ball four, not giving Jose much there. Lind with one on one down, grounds to second throw to the bag over to first double play ball, Lind back to his last season form. Jays really need a good first baseman.

Top 2nd: Wieters, ball four, leadoff walk not what Morrow wanted. Betemit fly ball to Bautista, one down throw to second but runner holding on Jose’s arm. Reynolds strikes out swinging, two down. Great pitch. Davis, fly ball to left but Thames has it at the wall for third out leaving runner stranded at first. Morrow will take that.
Bottom 2nd: Encarnacion, in a good streak right now at least. 2-2 count, goes down for this one and golfs it right at short, great catch by Hardy inches off the ground. Thames who knows why this guy is hitting above the rest of the order, this season so far, number nine in my book. Fly ball to Jones in centre for the out, two down for Lawrie. Pops it up way up, to at first for third out.

Top 3rd: Andino, full count, pops it up to second for Johnson. One on for Reimold, ground ball to Escobar, throw to Lind for second out. 2-0 grounds to Escobar, low throw to Lind but Lind makes the out. This game is humming along fast. 46 pitch count for Morrow.
Bottom 3rd: Rasmus leading off, lines it to right but robbed by great catch by Andino at second, robbed Colby of at least a base if not a double. Very nice. Arencibia with one down. Pops it up to Reimold in left. Two down for Escobar. Grounds to Andino at second to end the inning leaving Johnson waiting to hit. Only 34 pitches for first three innings.

Top 4th: Markakis, had the RBI in the first. Lines into the left field corner, Thames watches it rattle around, he is unable to play that left corner in this stadium at least. Markakis with a double, Jones lines first pitch up the middle here comes Markakis and beats the throw by Rasmus, 2-1 Orioles still nobody out. Wieters 2-2 count, hammers this one high to right, Jose makes the catch right up against the wall and throw to second holds Jones at first. One down for Betemit. 0-2 count, fly ball to centre, Rasmus makes the catch at the wall turns and throw to second to keep runner at first, two down. Reynolds, high fly ball to Thames to end the inning. But Morrow not sharp tonight so far. 58 pitch count.
Bottom 4th: Johnson to lead off. Slow roller to third, low throw just beats Johnson at first. One down for Bautista .174 average, ouch bigtime for Jose. Way off that pitch outside, pressing Jose. There we go singles to left, a single is fine for Jose right now. Lind, whoa, lines first pitch to left, misplayed by the fielder and throw comes in and beats Jose but Jose round the catcher and touches home plate to score, whoa that WAS close and very lucky, they had him out by a mile up the line. Lind at second score 2-2. Encarnacion grounds to short, Two down. Oh my, lines it right back at Hunter, knocks it down and throw to Davis at first who drops the ball and Thames safe, error on the play. Lind at third. Lady luck on the Jays team tonight. Lawrie with two on. 2-1 count, grounds to third, throw to first to get Lawrie. Jays get one but strand two out there. Hunter at 50 pitches.

Top 5th: Davis strikes out swinging on three pitches, that’s better Brandon, Andino, fly ball to centre, this one is carrying and over head of Colby into the seats at the 400 mark, home run Andino. 3-2 Orioles. Reimold 0-2 count, strikes out swinging on three pitches, two down for Hardy, 0-2 count, pops it up to Thames in left for third out. Pitch count 70. I don’t think Brandon will be going a complete game tonight.
Bottom 5th: Rasmus, fly ball to left and this one will carry over the Jays bullpen, this game is all tied up yet again 3-3. Arencibia, fly ball to Jones in centre. One down for Escobar, he gets hold of one and this one is out in left field seats, the ball is flying out tonight. 4-3 Jays. Johnson, strikes out swinging. Two down for Bautista. 0-2 count, strikes out swinging. Jose is going after some really bad pitches.

Top 6th: Morrow has some run support to work with now. Markakis, fly ball to left, Thames makes the catch, one down for Jones, he hammers this one to centre, Rasmus can only watch this one, a monster home run off the glass windows of the restaurant. 4-4 game yet again tied up. Nobody can hold a lead tonight. Wieters bounces to Lind, takes it himself to the bag at first, two down. Betemit grounds back to Morrow throw to Lind for the final out but once again Morrow has given up the lead.
Bottom 6th: Lind fly ball to right for the first out. Encarnacion, hammers this one, over the wall into centre, another home run, number four and none from Jose !!!! 5-4 game. Home run number four for the Jays. This is getting ridiculous. Thames singles back up the middle. Lawrie, with runner on, grounds to short, over to second on throw to first double play ball to end the inning.

Top 7th: Morrow has the lead yet again, can he nail it down that is the real question. 90 pitch count. Reynolds leading off. Frasor warming up in bullpen. Strikes out looking. One down for grounds to Johnson, throw to Lind for second out. Andino, grounds to Lawrie, throw to Lind for third out. That will be it for Morrow also at 102 pitch count. By comparison Hunter only on 80! Not a good outing by Morrow although he managed to give seven innings.
Bottom 7th: Rasmus, starting to show his talents. Full count and takes ball four high. One on for Arencibia. That is it for Hunter only 84 pitches but Showalter needs a new arm. Sidearmer O’Day. Bunting and a good one back to O’Day Arencibia out at first but did the job to move Rasmus to second. Top of the order Escobar. Jays want an insurance run here. 2-2 count. Grounds back up the middle to second throw to first and Escobar walking up the line, that is NOT good Yunel, did not even put his bat down. I hope Vizquel gets on his case for that attitude. Johnson. With runner at third. Johnson strikes out swinging.

Top 8th: Fraser now pitching. Setting up for Cordero ? not Santos who is home visiting his new born. Davis in left for Thames. Reimold, grounds it to short, past a slow Escobar, dives after the ball is past him, should have had that one. No error given. Hardy with one on. 0-2 count, strikes out swinging. Markakis, here comes Oliver to relieve Frasor and probably for one hitter. Cordero and Janssen warming up in bullpen. Runner going and throw not in time. Stolen base. Full count. Slow bounces to Johnson, holds his throw, both runners safe. Jones, sac fly here will tie it up again. 2-2 count, needs an out here badly. Strikes out and he knew it. Two down for Mound conference more for infield strategy it looks like. Wieters with runners at first and third. 3-1 count, wild pitch but not far enough to score on, bases loaded. Betemit single first pitch back up the middle two runs score and just like that 6-5 game. Oliver faced one too many. A pitch too late here comes Farrell. Janssen now pitching. Two on two down. Reynolds, strikes out swinging. But damage is done, can the Jays come back once more? Five times is a bit much to expect especially with slumping Bautista and Lind up to hit in the next inning.
Bottom 8th: Pedro Strop now pitching for Orioles. Bautista to lead off. High and inside, usually that gets Jose mad, we shall see. 1-2 count, pulls it to third, throw beats him and his woes continue. Lind, 0-3 tonight. Full count, low ball four. No pinch runner for Lind ? Davis already in the game but there must be someone faster than Lind on the bench. One on one down for Encarnacion. 2-2 count, grounds to third, throw to second over to first double play ball. Jays will have to face Orioles closer. Will it be ex-Jays Gregg?

Top 9th: Casey has to stay out there to hold them. Davis, High pop up on first pitch to Rasmus in centre, one down. Andino, grounds to Escobar at short, fumbles it but just managed to the runner, two down for Reimold. Turns on this one and this is out of here in left field seats. Home run, 7-5 Orioles. Hardy, pops it up to Rasmus running in from centre. But Jays have their work cut out to get two back.
Bottom 9th: Jim Johnson now pitching with an 0.00 ERA. Bottom of the order for Jays. Davis leading off. Grounds to short, throw to first, one down. Lawrie, hitless tonight 0-3. Off the end of his bat to third, Johnson fumbles it and Lawrie safe at first. Rasmus grounds first pitch to first steps on the bag to get Colby as Lawrie goes to second on the play. Two down for Arencibia. Hits him, payback for the home runs off Oriolies pitchers tonight. Payback tomorrow . Francisco pinch running. Escobar a chance to redeem himself just a base hit Yunel don’t try to hit it out. 1-2 count, fly ball to right. He could not resist. Jays pitchers give one away as Orioles win series opener 7-5.

May see Omar Vizquel start tomorrow in fact I would not have been surprised to see him in the 9th with two on, I would give better odds on Omar getting a single than Yunel in that situation. We may yet see that later in the season.

The good: Kelly Johnson home run to get it going. Bautista in the 4th to avoid tag and score. Home run power also from Escobar, Rasmus and Encarnacion. But all solo runs and minimal damage.

Not so good: Morrow far too many pitches in the early innings and unable to dominate the Orioles bats.

The bad: Escobar in the 7th not running out first. Not even dropping his bat. Can you see Lawrie doing that? That is the attitude that Atlanta did not like. Fumbles easy out in the 9th. Yunel needs a reminder that there is a far better shortstop sitting on the bench.

The very bad: Jays hitters 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
