Game two Toronto v Texas Saturday August 2, 2008
Jays have to rebound tonight after awful giveaway last night. Although BJ was the goat the game had been lost earlier buy the failure once more to bring in the runners in scoring position. AJ has never won 13 games in his career so great incentive tonight.
Tonight: AJ Burnett 12-9 4.50 ERA v Scott Feldman. 4-3 4.97 ERA
Lineups : Toronto: Inglett, Scutaro, Rios, Overbay, Lind, Stairs, Barajas, Rolen, Wilkerson and Burnett pitching.
Texas: KInsler, Catalanatto, Young, Hamilton, Byrd, Murphy, Laird, Davis, Metcalf and Feldman pitching.
Result: Jays win 6-4. Burnett wins number thirteen and Ryan save number twenty one.
The good: Inglett and Scutaro with stolen bases. Sixth inning after giving up lead and Scutaro’s mistake Jays hitters get four Rolen and Barajas heroes. Burnett pitching very well into the sixth. The bullpen holds it for Burnett. Jays come from behind to win. Hitters 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
The bad: Barajas terrible throw away in 2nd to give up first Texas run. Scutaro base running mistake in the sixth.
The game: Top 1st: Inglett pops out to Young at SS. Scutaro at bat, hit in the back. Rios now with Scutaro at 1B and one d own. Scutaro running and Feldman’s throw to 2B is wild into CF and Scutaro moves up to 3B. Aggressive play here from the Jays. Full count to Alex now. Walks him, lays off the pitch down and away, Alex is smartening up, he was swinging at that pitch first half of season. Overbay now with two on and only one out. Grounds to 2B Scutaro scores, Overbay out at 1B. 1-0 Jays. Alex moves to 2B. Lind at bat. Two down. Taps it weakly back to Feldman throw to 1B gets Lind. 19 pitches.
Bottom 1st: Kinsler at bat, high fly ball out to Lind in LF. Catalanatto at bat, one down. strikes him out. Young at bat two down. Strikes out, number two for AJ. 12 pitches. Yankees have already beaten Angels this afternoon 8-2. Tampa beating Detroit 7-2 and Boston winning 9-4 so it looks as if Jays have to win tonight just to stay pat.
Top 2nd: Stairs at bat, first pitch fly ball out to CF Byrd. One down. Barajas at bat grounds weakly to Davis at 1B.Two down. Rolen at bat strikes out. Three up and down. 28 pitches.
Bottom 2nd: Hamilton at bat doubles first pitch to right centre wall. Byrd at bat, full count. Grounds to Overbay, flip to Burnett out at 1B, Hamilton to 3B. Murphy at bat, one down. Barajas throw to 3B down third base line, scores Hamilton.1-1. Error on Barajas. That was a terrible giveaway. They can’t afford this. Grounds to Overbay out at 1B two down. Laird fly ball out to shallow CF Rios. 25 pitches.
Top 3rd: Wilkerson at bat, strikes out. Inglett at bat shows bunt, singles into RF. Scutaro at bat, fly ball out to Hamilton in RF. Rios at bat two down. Inglett running and safe on throw. Full count, Inglett will be running. Loops it into shallow RF past Kinsler and with Inglett running easy to score. 2-1 Jays. Overbay at bat, two down and Rios at 1B. Alex stealing and good throw gets him at 2B. 50 pitches.
Bottom 3rd: AJ has the lead again. Davis at bat fly ball out to Lind in LF. One down. Metcalf at bat grounds to Scutaro and throw to Overbay for the out at 1B. KInsler with two down, fly ball out to Lind in LF . Three up and down for AJ. 36 pitches.
Top 4th: Overbay at the plate when Rios was caught stealing last inning is back at bat. Fly ball out to Byrd in CF. One down. Lind strikes out. Stairs with two down. Full count. Grounds it to Davis, throw to Feldman gets Stairs at 1B. Three up and down. 62 pitches.
Bottom 4th: Catalanatto grounds it off Burnett to Inglett throw to Overbay gets him at 1B. Nice play Joe. Young with one down strikes out, number three tonight. Hamilton at bat with two down. Top 5th: Barajas, tonight’s goat so far with his error in the second inning to give up run to Texas. Wilkerson full count and walks. Bottom 5th: Murphy at bat, singles to CF. Laird at bat, doubles into LF corner. Murphy slow runner stops at 3B even with Lind weak throwing arm. Davis with two in scoring position and no outs. 3-0 count. Walks to load bases. Metcalf and no outs.Strikes out. One down. Kinsler at bat. 3-1 count. Pops it up to Inglett. Murphy has to hold at 3B. Two down. Catalanatto, 3-0 count. Full count. Doubles into LF, two runs score, Davis trying for three is thrown out at the plate. Texas ahead 3-2. BUT AJ pitched very well to limit that, he was in big trouble with bases loaded and no outs and was one strike away from getting out of inning without a run. 79 pitches.
Top 6th: Scutaro at bat singles into CF. Rios now at bat singles into RF. Scutaro trying for 3B thrown out by Hamilton in RF. Rios goes to 2B on the throw. One down one on. Overbay at bat, full count. Walks. This would be bases loaded without Scutaro’s error. That’s it for Feldman. Jamey Wright pitching. Lind at bat, not a good night at bat for him tonight. Full count. Taps it in front of plate throw to 1B to get Lind, two out but runners on 2B and 3B. Stairs at bat two down. 1 for 3 with runners in scoring position. Intentional walk to Stairs. Ryan saves and Burnett has career high win number thirteen.
BUT this is one the Jays had to win just to stay with the rest of the division all winners tonight.
Tampa beat Detroit 9-3, Yankees beat Angels 8-2, Boston beat Oakland 12-2. Balltiore still playing in Seattle.
