Twins win at Knology Park

Minnesota 4 Jays 0.

NOT a good game....
Teams today.
Twins CF. Gomez, 2BPunto, LF. Young, RF. Jones, DH. Ruiz, 1B.Buscher, 3B.Macri, C. Norales, S.S. Everett and pitching RHP. Perkins
Jays. CF. Rios, C.Zaun, LF.Stairs, DH. Thomas, 1B. Overbay, RF. Lind, SS Macdonald, 3B.Inglett, 2B. Adamas, P AJ Burnett.

Weather today a factor, very windy and humid, but the same for both teams. Wind was swirling from right to left, quite an adventure for fielders.

The good: Definitely Lind with three hits.
Matt Stairs over the shoulder catch in left in 2nd after it looked like wind had turned him around.
Reasonably good outing by AJ Burnett two out of three innings.
Good relief pitching by Accardo, League and Wells.

The bad: Two on in 1st nobody out and could not bring them in.. sounds like a broken record from 2007.
Man at third with one out could not score him.
Bases loaded in 8th, one out, could not score.
Very poor clutch hitting by Jays.

The game. Top of 1st Gomez bunts on, steals second, Punto moves him to 3rd Young brings him in with base hit.
This to me was the story of the afternoon. Twins outplayed the Jays and gave them a lesson in short ball and basics. Bunting, stealing and timely hitting by the Twins, none of which were present for Jays. Inning fortuantely ended for Burnett with double play Johhny Mac to Adams to Overbay. Not a good start with three base hits.
Bottom of 1st Rios leadoff walk, Zaun base hit two on... BUT Stairs strikes out, Thomas flies out, Overbay grounds to second...
2nd. Much better for Burnett, two quickouts and great catch by Stairs.
Lind leadoff double, first of three hits in game, Johnny Mac moves him to third, one out. Inglett first pitch groundout, Adams strikes out. Again great opportunity missed.
Now 3 LOB in first two innnings.
Third inning three up and down by Burnett. A good outing apart from first.
Bottom of third good hit by Rios to centre but wind pulled it down. Stairs seeing ball well.
4th Downs pitching, good inning but needed four outs after Adams in the hole almost behind first went to second to try to get runner when easier play would have been to first.
Bottom of 4th. Lind a single, his second hit of the game.
5th. Tallett pitching. Everett base hit, Gomez triple ( this guy can really run !) Everett scores.
Punto bunts to 1st, Gomez scores easily.... Twins are giving a lesson in fundamentals to Jays.
3-0 Twins.
Bottom of 5th three up three down for Jays. Rios strikes out.
6th Accardo pitching Buck Coats for Rios. HR Twins 4-0. 9 hits to 3 for Jays.
Bottom of 6th. Three up three down, Zaun, Thomas and Stairs.
7th League pitching. good inning, three up three down. Good play by Johhny Mac.
Bottom of 7th. Jays three up, three down for the third inning in a row... not good at all.
8th Wells pitching, good inning.
Bottom of 8th. Lopez on via error, Coats base hit, this kid keeps hitting, Thigpen on second esrror by Twins in inning, bases loaded. Matt Watson grounds into double play... that kind of day for Jays.
9th Wells pitched well.
Bottom of 9th. Snider walks (this guy is also good..) Cannon flies out. Lind another base hit third of the game. Two on and Lopez hits into double play....

Twins 11 hits to Jays 5.
Tomorrow Detroit is in town and Jays must play much better or be embarassed..

Yesterday's game

Yesterday away game in Bradenton.
Pittsburgh 8 Toronto 7.

the good. Eckstein grand slam in six run second inning.
Barajas two hits with a double.
Jays started well off Tom Gorzelanny scoring five in 1 1/3 innings.

not so good: McGowan three run two inning stint.

the bad. Jean Machi giving up three runs in one and third inning to lose game

For Pittsburgh. Casey Fossum gets the win. Steve Pearce had two run homer and scored twice. Other home run was Xavier Nady.

Bright House Field

What does the blogmeister do when Jays are out of town?
Of course find the nearest game...

Today my first trip to Phillies Spring HQ at Bright House Field. What a gem of a ball park. Bigger than Knology and more excellent features such as berm seating in the outfield and also formal picnic tables area in left field which include the food...... Have booked another eight games to keep me happy... including two night games which Jays do not have. One of the games will be a Legends game. Stay tuned for lineups...
Today the sight of old friends such as "Wild" Mitch Williams with great hairstyle, signing autographs on his salsa product. Phillies Jimy "one m" Williams and Pat Gillick.

Today Phillies were playing Tampa and friends believe me Tampa is a very different team this year, beware Jays. Many of last year's team but this team is built on speed.
Lead off Akinori Iwamora, major home run 2nd pitch today and next at bat great speed.
Two triples in the rain shortened game of only 5 innings but by end of 2nd Rays were 4-0 against a very good Phillies side.
Crawford triple also, that guy and Bartlett can really move.
The Diamond Outfitters store was as good as the Rogers efforts in Toronto and much better than Knology Park.
Could not resist getting a Phillies striped shirt for the eight games.
Game unfortunately called after five but the blogmeister enjoyed his seat in Row 1 behind Home Plate... first time ever.
Tomorrow back to Knology for the Twins and Jays. At this time I have not heard today's Jays result.

more spelling

Sorry friends... Halladay......

and if I miss others, it is my keyboard skills. Am always in rush to get the good news to all the snow bound Canucks...

Another great weather day here post Hillary's great victories...

Garbage

Phillies 6 Jays 1....

Terrible game..
Phillies are a very good team, but Jays had their chances, especially earlier on with men on base. There was no (public) batting practice today and it definitely showed.

The good: Halladay three innings near perfect for this time of spring.
Frank appears locked in (almost) two very good hits to centre field wall. Much better timing than earlier in the week.
Rolen's triple in first.
Hill's stolen base in second.

The bad. Hits but not taking advantage especially the big guys on first team... shades of last season. Could not bring in Rolen from third with one out.
Vernon still way off although he did get infield hit. Overbay and Reed Johnson, Zaun, Eckstein still off timing.
Jays caught in two double plays to end rallies.

The game: Lineups. Phillies Rollins, Bruneltt, Utley, Howard, (Jaysen ex-Jay)Werth, Jenkins, Helms, Taguchi, Ruiz amd Myers pitching.

Jays 1st team: Eckstein, Rolen, Rios, Wells, Thomas, Overbay, Hill, Johnson, Zaun and Halladay.

Double play for Jays in first to get Hallady out of only trouble in the three innings.
Bottom of first Rolen great triple, but Rios and Wells could not get a hit to bring him in.

Top of second. Hallady pitching very well, great curve to get Howard and finished with two strikeouts to end inning.
Bottom of second. Thomas flies out to the wall in Centre, just missing home run, Overbay flies out to right wall. Hill base hit and then steals second, Reed grounds out.
Top of third, Halladay again using that great curve pitched great inning. He is ready now...
Fourth Inning, Beck in trouble with two on but gets fly ball to end inning.
Bottom of 4th . Wells beats out infield hit, Frank flies out to centre wall again, Overbay high chopper that Howard leaps to get, great play. Any other first base would have been over his head.
Myers pitching very well also. Would love to see Hallady and Myers one day go distance.
5th inning. Both teams with three hits but Jays have had best chances.
Beck gets into huge trouble and four runs by end of inning. Two on, base hit scores two, Utley double into RF scores two more.4-0
Howard lines out to Reed in left great overhead catch.
Phillies game almost over.

Bottom of 5th. Hill second hit, Reed grounds into double play and Zaun flies out.

6th inning Romero pitching, in trouble wth bases loaded. Johhny Mac gets glove on very difficult chance but a pssible for him
Double play, run scores, then pop up to Lyle. It could have been much worse than one run. 5-0 to Phillies
Bottom of the 6th Johhny Mac base hit to left, Scutaro grounds into double play, and Shannon grounds out.
Top of 7th Phillies go 1,2,3.
Bottom of 7th Wells (still in game definitely needs the batting practice) flies out to RF, Thomas grounds out to third, Overbay grounds out to 1st... That inning typifies the batting of the big guys right now.
Top of 8th Thorpe pitching. Home Run... 6-0.... Jays have not scored a run in last two games.
Bottom of 8th Joe Inglelet ground s to SS Reede griudns to 1st, Barajas a hit !! Johnny Mac grounds to pitcher.
9th Jesse Carlssen. nice inning.

Bottom of 9th. Scutaro pos up.
Stewart finally a hit... double all the way left field. Coats shatters bat but moves Shannon to 3rd.
Snider pinch hitting for Thomas base hit scores Stewart, finally a run....
Thigpen flies out to center.
Jays 7 hits and only one run to show for it.

Long way to go friends... but there are some good signs. Halladay ready. Frank almost has his timing. Double play today and no stolen bases against Jays and one for. Pitchers really are holding the runners. Will be interesting to see "Tampa runners" against the Jays.

Spelling

Oops Barajas of course... not Barajosa.

Correction

Correction re number of times Catchers have caught runners this season...

Jays are now 4-4... Zaun 2-2, Barajosa 1 and Thigpen 1...
Someone has been practising... great to see after last year. The test will be against Rays... Joe Maddon says he wants Rays to be THE best base stealing team in majors...
The previous comment re Crawford and Pena (!) double steal in first inning of first game is now being touted as major league record...
